Mazda is developing a flagship sports car that would sit above the MX-5, according to CEO Masahiro Moro. The proposed model would serve as a low-volume halo vehicle for the brand while allowing the MX-5 to continue as Mazda’s affordable, high-volume sports car.
Mazda Plans a New Flagship Sports Car
Mazda has long focused on lightweight, balanced sports cars rather than pursuing high horsepower or premium price tags. The MX-5 has built its reputation on driver involvement, and Moro said that philosophy will continue.
According to Moro, the MX-5 is not being replaced and will remain the company’s accessible sports car. Instead, Mazda is working on a flagship model positioned above it, filling a gap at the top of the brand’s sports car lineup.
Moro also said the vehicle would be a low-volume model and could be hand-built to represent the Mazda brand.
Patent Sparks Questions About Mazda’s Future Sports Car
In an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, Moro said he wants a “hero car” that fully embodies Mazda’s values. His comments came shortly after a Mazda patent surfaced showing a compact convertible featuring butterfly doors, a front-mounted engine, and rear-wheel drive.
Mazda has not identified the vehicle shown in the patent or confirmed that it is headed for production. However, the design is significantly more dramatic than any current Mazda model and may have been inspired by the 2023 Iconic SP concept, which previously fueled discussion about a possible RX-7 revival.
Could the Patent Describe a Car Above the MX-5?
Many enthusiasts believed the patent previewed the next-generation MX-5, particularly as the roadster is reportedly moving toward electrification. Moro’s comments, however, suggest another possibility: the design could represent a flagship sports car positioned above the MX-5.
The butterfly doors would be an unusual feature for a sports car centered on simplicity and affordability. On a flagship model, however, they could provide the distinctive appearance expected of a halo vehicle while differentiating it from the MX-5.
Mazda’s Sports Car Strategy
The patented layout also reflects Mazda’s established approach. A front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car powered by a four-cylinder engine would indicate the company is extending its lightweight, driver-focused formula instead of building a high-horsepower competitor to the Toyota Supra or Nissan Z.
Such an approach could allow Mazda to introduce a more premium and visually striking flagship while preserving the characteristics that define the MX-5.
