Audi is exploring opportunities to expand its lineup of Avant station wagons in the United States, even as the company continues to prioritize crossover vehicles. Company executives say any expansion would depend on a viable business case, but Audi remains committed to offering enthusiast-focused vehicles alongside its SUV lineup.
Audi Wants to Strengthen Its Wagon Presence
While crossovers continue to dominate Audi’s strategy outside Europe, the automaker’s North American division is evaluating ways to bring more station wagons to U.S. customers.
Audi has historically offered one of the strongest wagon lineups among Germany’s luxury automakers in the United States. The company’s wagon heritage dates back to the arrival of the Fox wagon in 1972, followed by the 5000 Avant, which later became the 100 Avant and eventually the A6 Avant.
Audi also became the first German luxury brand to offer a compact wagon in the U.S. with the A4 Avant, at a time when BMW and Mercedes-Benz did not sell comparable compact wagons in the American market. The company has also offered models including the S4 Avant, S6 Avant, and RS 6 Avant.
Key U.S. Markets Drive Wagon Demand
Audi believes certain regions are better positioned to support additional wagon models. California, the Pacific Northwest, and New England have traditionally been strong markets for wagons.
According to Brabec’s interview with Road & Track, the A6 Allroad has also performed well in snowier regions and has been a strong seller in New York City.
Speaking to Road & Track, Brabec said:
“Part of the Audi brand at times is to have the right sort of offering for the enthusiast. We’re not sort of the vanilla brand that will just have three or four SUVs and a couple sedans and call it a day. We want to be that brand that really pushes the envelope and has something for its enthusiasts.”
Business Case Will Determine Expansion
Despite the interest in expanding the Avant lineup, Brabec said additional models cannot be introduced without first demonstrating a sound business case.
“At the end of the day, it’s always a little bit the business case, and ‘can we make it work,’ and things like that. That’s what guys like me do. But we definitely are always looking for opportunities, because it is a strength that we can play with [customers] that get it,” Brabec added.
Brabec also noted that the A6 Allroad’s dimensions have contributed to its appeal in New York City. According to the interview, owners are not subject to the higher parking rates applied to larger SUVs such as the Q5 and Q7, making the wagon more attractive in the city.
Possible Future Audi Avant Models
Audi’s performance wagons continue to have a dedicated following, and the success of the RS 6 Avant could influence future product decisions.
According to the report, that success may prompt Audi to reconsider its earlier decision not to bring the RS 5 Avant to the United States. It could also create an opportunity for the S5 Avant to reach the U.S. market.
The company may also consider developing an Allroad version of the A5 Avant. The report notes that demand for Allroad models extends beyond the United States, with European buyers also supporting the segment.
Outlook for Audi Avants in America
Audi continues to evaluate opportunities to grow its Avant lineup in the United States while maintaining a focus on enthusiast-oriented vehicles. Although no additional wagon models have been confirmed, the company says it is continuing to assess whether expanding its offerings makes business sense in key regional markets.
