The GMC Sierra EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV are the subject of a new GM safety campaign involving certain 2026 model-year trucks. According to a report, the affected vehicles may have defective spare wheels that could crack, creating a potential safety risk if the spare tire is put into service.
Safety Campaign Covers Certain 2026 Electric Pickups
According to GM Authority, General Motors has identified the campaign as N262556920, covering certain 2026-model-year GMC Sierra EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV pickups.
The campaign has not yet appeared in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall database, meaning there is currently no federal recall campaign number or published recall population.
Defective Spare Wheels May Crack
The reported issue involves the vehicles’ spare wheels rather than the wheels installed during normal driving. While the condition may not present an immediate hazard, owners are advised to follow GM’s recall instructions to ensure the spare wheel is safe if it is ever needed.
According to the report, a manufacturing defect could cause cracking around the wheel disc vent holes. If the condition progresses, the wheel disc could separate, reducing the driver’s ability to steer and increasing the risk of a crash.
The report notes that maintaining full steering control is especially important given the size and weight of the GMC Sierra EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV, particularly after a spare wheel has been installed following a flat tire or another roadside incident.
Dealers Will Inspect and Replace Affected Spare Wheels
As part of the safety campaign, GM dealers will inspect the spare wheels and replace any from the affected production lots at no cost to owners.
Dealers have already been instructed to inspect affected inventory before vehicle delivery. Owners are advised to wait for official recall notification letters from General Motors. In the meantime, they can contact GMC Customer Assistance and reference GM Safety Recall N262556920 for additional information.
Recall Population Has Not Yet Been Announced
General Motors has not disclosed how many vehicles are included in the campaign. That information may become available once the recall is listed in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s database.
The report notes that the recall population could be relatively small because the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV are not high-volume sellers. For comparison, General Motors sold 11,275 Silverado EVs and 7,996 Sierra EVs in the United States in 2025, while a separate recall earlier this year affected 271,770 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles over a rearview-camera issue.
The safety campaign remains in development as GM prepares to notify affected owners and complete inspections of eligible vehicles.
