The BMW iX3 could receive a higher-performance variant as BMW considers expanding the lineup beyond its current offerings. While the automaker has not confirmed a new model, comments from a BMW executive suggest the all-electric crossover may eventually gain an M Performance version.
BMW iX3 Already Offers Strong Performance
The BMW iX3 debuted with the 50 xDrive model, which uses a dual-motor powertrain producing 469 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. BMW says that output allows the electric crossover to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than five seconds.
The lineup also includes the rear-wheel-drive iX3 40, which delivers 315 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque from a single electric motor.
Comments Point to a Higher-Performance Variant
According to a report from Australian publication CarSales, BMW is considering an even more powerful version of the iX3.
Brendan Michel, BMW Australia’s chief of product, recently described the iX3 50 xDrive as the “mid-tier model” in the current range. Although he did not confirm that a sportier version is in development, the description suggests additional variants could follow.
For the past several years, BMW has positioned M Performance models just below its full M vehicles in its standard model lineup. Based on those comments, the report suggests an M Performance version of the iX3 could arrive, potentially under the iX3 M60 name.
BMW i3 Could Follow the Same Path
The report also indicates that an M Performance version of the electric BMW i3 sedan and Touring models appears increasingly likely if the iX3 receives similar treatment.
Like the iX3, the i3 lineup includes an entry-level rear-wheel-drive 40 model with a single motor and a 50 xDrive model with dual motors. Both vehicles share the same power outputs.
BMW has already confirmed that its electric M3 will simply carry the M3 name. Because the company offers M Performance versions across much of its lineup, the possibility of an i3 M60 also appears plausible based on the report.
No Launch Timing Announced
BMW has not provided any indication of when higher-performance versions of the iX3 or i3 could be introduced.
For now, the company has not confirmed additional models, but the latest comments suggest the current electric lineup may expand with new M Performance variants in the future.
