Nissan is preparing for a leadership change in its global design organization as Alfonso Albaisa steps down as the company’s global design chief on Oct. 1. Matthew Weaver will assume the role, overseeing Nissan’s future design direction as the automaker continues its broader transformation.

Matthew Weaver to Succeed Alfonso Albaisa

Alfonso Albaisa, who has served as Nissan’s global design chief since 2017, will step down from the position on Oct. 1. He will remain with the company as an adviser before retiring on Dec. 31.

Matthew Weaver will succeed Albaisa and the two will continue working together through December to support a smooth leadership transition.

Weaver is known for serving as the lead exterior designer of the first-generation Nissan Juke. Before joining Nissan in 2001, he also worked at Ford and Volkswagen.

Nissan’s Design Language Has Continued to Evolve

During Albaisa’s tenure, Nissan further developed its V-motion design signature. The Vmotion 2.0 concept, unveiled in early 2017, previewed an updated interpretation of the design language that helped create a more unified appearance across the lineup.

In a 2024 interview with Autoblog, Albaisa said that “there is no longer a face of Nissan,” reflecting a shift that is now visible across the company’s current vehicles.

Today, Nissan’s rugged models, including the Frontier and Armada, feature a more distinctive off-road-inspired appearance than crossover models such as the Rogue. The report notes that differentiating those vehicles could become more difficult if every model followed the same styling formula.

Weaver Brings Global Design Experience

Throughout his career at Nissan, Weaver contributed to the development of several models for Europe and Japan, including the Qashqai, which was previously sold in the United States as the Rogue Sport.

His experience across multiple global vehicle programs positions him to guide Nissan’s next generation of product designs.

Leadership Change Comes During Company Turnaround

The appointment comes as Nissan continues implementing its Re:Nissan turnaround strategy following financial losses.

In the United States, the automaker plans to introduce several new models, including the revived Xterra, a body-on-frame SUV that will compete with vehicles such as the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler.

As Nissan enters its next chapter, Weaver will lead the company’s global design efforts while working to shape future models as the brand expands its product lineup.
