Porsche has reaffirmed its commitment to the electric 718 Cayman and Boxster despite broader challenges facing the company’s business. CEO Michael Leiters said the all-electric sports cars will proceed because they make economic sense, while also outlining plans for the Taycan and addressing the possibility of a future flagship model above the 911.

Electric 718 Cayman and Boxster Remain on Track

Speaking with the German publication Frankfurter Allgemeine, Leiters confirmed that Porsche will continue with the electric 718 Cayman and Boxster. According to the report, the platform is also being reverse-engineered to accommodate internal combustion powertrains.

Leiters rejected the suggestion that the project is moving forward primarily because Audi could benefit from the development work for a future electric TT successor. He said Porsche first evaluates whether a vehicle makes economic sense before considering potential synergies with other Volkswagen Group brands.

“With the electric 718, we came to the conclusion that we will build the model,” Leiters said, “because it is the best solution economically and will be a fantastic car.”

Porsche Plans to Simplify the Taycan Lineup

Leiters also discussed the future of the Taycan, which has sold in lower numbers than Porsche had anticipated.

He said the company’s strategy of streamlining its model range does not necessarily mean discontinuing entire vehicle lines. Instead, Porsche plans to reduce the number of Taycan variants to simplify the lineup.

“With the Taycan, we will further reduce the number of models and thus decrease complexity,” Leiters said. “We have no plans to discontinue the Taycan in the short term. We’ve invested heavily in the model and want to monitor how demand develops.”

Future Halo Model Remains Undisclosed

Leiters was also asked about the possibility of a new flagship model positioned above the Porsche 911.

While he did not dismiss the idea, he provided no additional details. Earlier this year, Porsche released a shadowy teaser image of a future hypercar, although it remains unclear whether it is related to the Mission X concept unveiled in 2023.

Porsche Continues Product Review

Porsche is reviewing its product portfolio as it works to improve profitability. While refining its lineup, the company has confirmed that the electric 718 Cayman and Boxster will continue moving toward production, and the Taycan will remain part of the range with a reduced number of variants.
