The E46 M3 CSL is one of BMW’s most iconic models, but its limited production, SMG transmission and absence from the U.S. market left some enthusiasts without an easy way to own one. One owner addressed those drawbacks by transforming an 86,000-mile E46 M3 into a CSL-inspired build with a conventional six-speed manual transmission.
The E46 M3 CSL BMW Never Made
The M3 began life in Silver Gray Metallic before being completely disassembled and refinished in BMW British Racing Green. Its exterior was updated with a CSL-style front bumper, a carbon-fiber roof panel with CSL roof rails and a CSL-style trunk lid.
The car rides on 19-inch BMW Style 163 wheels, a design closely associated with the CSL and later offered with the E46 M3 Competition Package/CS. Under the hood, the 3.2-liter S54 inline-six received an Evolve carbon-fiber airbox, new camshafts and an Evolve Alpha-N tune.
Supersprint headers and mid-sections feed an aftermarket muffler equipped with titanium tips, continuing the CSL-inspired approach throughout the car.
Extensive Mechanical and Chassis Upgrades
The M3 also received substantial maintenance and chassis work. The VANOS and throttle bodies were rebuilt, the connecting-rod bearings were replaced, and a Turner Motorsport rear-subframe reinforcement kit was installed in 2024.
Bilstein B16 PSS10 coilovers, Dinan fixed camber plates, Rogue Engineering rear suspension components and brakes sourced from an F87 M2 complete the chassis upgrades.
The most significant change was made to the transmission. Instead of the original SMG setup, the car was converted to conventional six-speed manual operation. A Rogue Engineering shifter and weighted illuminated ZHP knob complete the conversion.
A More Comfortable Interior Than a Real CSL
Inside, the car is considerably less austere than a genuine CSL. Power Recaro Sportster CS seats feature tan leather and black Alcantara, with matching upholstery in the rear.
The cabin also includes an Android Auto head unit with Apple CarPlay, Bavsound speakers, automatic climate control and cruise control.
The E46 M3 CSL Clone Sold for $96,000
The car sold on Bring a Trailer for $96,000 after 53 bids. At that price, BaT charges buyers 5 percent, adding another $4,800 and bringing the effective purchase price to $100,800.
That represents serious money for a modified, 86,000-mile E46 M3. The timing is also notable because genuine M3 CSLs are getting close to becoming straightforward U.S. imports under the federal 25-year rule.
NHTSA says the exemption is calculated from an individual vehicle’s date of manufacture. Production M3 CSLs were built during 2003, meaning they should begin aging into unrestricted federal import eligibility during 2028.
The Manual Conversion Could Affect Its Value
The transmission remains one of the biggest questions surrounding the car’s value. The factory M3 CSL came with BMW’s six-speed SMG II automated manual transmission.
Manual-converted CSLs do exist, but like this car, they are conversions. That leaves uncertainty over whether changing the factory transmission could affect the appeal of a CSL as it becomes eligible for unrestricted federal importation in the United States.
Regardless, the British Racing Green M3 offers an intriguing alternative. It is not a genuine CSL, but it channels much of the original car’s philosophy while adding chassis, braking and suspension upgrades and a conventional manual gearbox.
For its new owner, the $100,800 effective purchase price places the CSL clone firmly in the territory of serious E46 M3 CSL money, while the value of genuine factory CSLs in the United States remains to be seen.
