The McLaren P50 appears to be nearing its official debut, with a new teaser showing fleeting glimpses of the automaker’s latest creation alongside the M6GT road car. The clip suggests the new special-edition supercar shares the M6GT’s silhouette and, more importantly, its manual transmission.
McLaren P50 Teaser Sets August 14 Reveal
McLaren has spent the past month preparing for the arrival of something special. The automaker rebuilt the M6GT road car that founder Bruce McLaren never completed, while reports emerged that McLaren was developing a manual special-edition supercar codenamed P50.
Now, McLaren has posted a short teaser clip on Instagram featuring the M6GT and brief views of the new creation. The latest model appears to share the M6GT’s silhouette and is expected to feature a manual transmission.
McLaren’s social media post provides few details, saying only that the new creation is inspired by McLaren’s legacy. The company says it will be revealed on August 14 at 13:00 BST (08:00 ET).
The reveal is scheduled for this coming Friday as part of the Monterey Car Week celebrations. Because the M6GT was a road car, the P50 is expected to follow the same formula, although the article notes that a more distinctive name would be preferable.
Limited Production and a High Price
Reports indicate that fewer than 100 examples of the P50 could be produced, making the chances of seeing one on the freeway slim. That would still be considerably more than the M6GT, which was limited to just three prototypes.
For buyers, the P50 would also represent McLaren’s first manual road car since the F1 went out of production in 1998. Reports claim the model could cost even more than the McLaren W1, which starts at around $2.1 million before options.
The combination of retro styling, limited production and a manual transmission could also make the P50 particularly valuable on the auction market, with buyers potentially able to resell the car for a profit.
Manual Supercars Are Returning
The McLaren P50 would arrive as manual transmissions make a comeback among ultra-exclusive cars. In 2026, the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale, Porsche 911 GT3 S/C and Hennessey Blackbird all debuted with stick-shift transmissions.
It remains unclear whether McLaren’s manual special edition will use a traditional setup like the Blackbird and 911 S/C or a digital recreation like the 12Cilindri Manuale.
McLaren’s regular supercars are already considered among the best to drive in their respective classes. The addition of three pedals and a stick would give the P50 a more engaging character.
A Different Direction for McLaren Design
The P50 could also take McLaren’s design in a different direction. The automaker is not known primarily for sensual design, but the new model’s old-school flavor and reduced focus on aerodynamic performance could make it the first truly pretty McLaren of the modern era.
