Kumho’s new Road Venture HT light-truck and SUV tire is designed for drivers who spend most of their time on pavement but still want the durability and rugged appearance associated with a truck or SUV tire.

Recently, I traveled to Seattle, Washington, to test the Road Venture HT at Evergreen Speedway. Rather than following a typical tire-drive program, Kumho provided several vehicles and three different environments for evaluation: a relatively high-speed oval, a wet course and a small autocross course.

The track itself is relatively small, and the “high-speed” testing was essentially conducted at highway speeds. The wet course also offered limited moisture, with Seattle providing only mildly wet conditions during the event. Still, the variety of driving environments provided useful opportunities to evaluate the tire.

Testing the Road Venture HT on a Toyota Tacoma

The main vehicle used for testing was a 2026 Toyota Tacoma 4×4. Having driven several Tacomas over the years, I was already familiar with the truck’s behavior. The Tacoma is also a popular midsize pickup, making replacement-tire costs an important consideration for owners.

According to Kumho, the Road Venture HT uses a structural design intended to promote even treadwear and durability. Its deep tread and reinforced blocks are designed to improve mileage, while 3D sipes and tie-bars are intended to enhance snow performance and reduce tread deformation.

Kumho offers a 75,000-mile limited treadwear warranty on P-metric sizes, giving the tire a significant selling point in the midmarket light-truck and SUV segment.

The basic goal is straightforward: provide a tire capable of handling everyday driving and abuse without requiring owners to spend a premium when replacement time arrives.

How Does the Road Venture HT Drive?

The Road Venture HT performed better than expected during the testing.

On dry pavement, the tire delivered slightly more grip than anticipated. Wet performance was in line with expectations for this type of tire, and the channels designed to move water away from the tread appeared to perform as intended.

For comparison, a similar truck previously driven with Pirelli Scorpion tires offered a stickier feel and more immediate pavement adhesion. The Kumho tires did not provide the same level of grip, but they remained composed and predictable.

That predictability became particularly important during emergency-style maneuvers. Even with traction control turned off, several journalists were able to push the tires beyond their limits and break them loose, leaving rubber on the track.

Under normal driving conditions, however, the Road Venture HT performed well. It did not feel overwhelmed and maintained a predictable connection with the road.

The Road Venture HT Is Not a Hardcore Off-Road Tire

The Road Venture HT should not be confused with a dedicated off-road tire.

Drivers who regularly tackle extreme off-road terrain would be better served by a serious all-terrain tire such as a BFGoodrich. The Road Venture HT is aimed at a different type of truck and SUV owner.

Kumho gives the tire a more aggressive sidewall appearance, providing the rugged look many truck owners want even if most of their driving takes place on pavement.

The Road Venture HT should be adequate for light off-road use, although the testing did not include enough rough terrain to properly evaluate that capability.

Its primary mission is pavement, including daily driving, highway cruising, durability, efficiency and comfort.

The Biggest Surprise Was How Quiet the Tire Is

The most impressive aspect of the Road Venture HT was not its grip but its road noise.

Many economy-oriented truck tires can generate substantial road noise, particularly when harder compounds are used to extend tread life. The Road Venture HT was remarkably quiet during testing.

The tire is also built for EVs, which generally require beefier sidewalls and thicker tires. Despite that construction, the Road Venture HT remained quiet and vibration-free even after some drivers deliberately broke traction during testing.

That matters because road noise is something drivers experience every day, unlike the occasional situation in which maximum tire grip becomes the priority.

Final Thoughts on the Kumho Road Venture HT

The Kumho Road Venture HT is not designed to outperform a premium performance tire in outright grip, nor is it intended to compete with a hardcore off-road tire. Its focus is different.

It is a midmarket tire designed to offer good road manners, long life, comfort and durability without making replacement tires excessively expensive. The 75,000-mile limited treadwear warranty for P-metric sizes adds to its value proposition.

The quiet ride is another significant advantage.

For owners spending $40,000 or $50,000 on a midsize pickup such as a Toyota Tacoma 4×4, the amount of time spent off-road is worth considering before choosing an aggressive tire. If most driving consists of commuting and highway use, there may be little reason to pay substantially more for a tire designed primarily for serious off-road conditions.

For many truck and SUV owners, the Road Venture HT makes a compelling case as a durable, comfortable and relatively quiet option for predominantly on-road driving.
