The G87 BMW M2 may not have reached the end of its evolution just yet. Production of the current-generation M2 began in late 2022, and BMW has since expanded the lineup with more powerful and specialized versions. Now, a longtime BMW insider claims that one more variant could arrive before the G87 reportedly bows out in July 2029.
The G87 M2 Has Already Evolved Significantly
The current BMW M2 received additional power and minor cosmetic updates for the 2025 model year. BMW then introduced the limited-production M2 CS, which combined 523 horsepower with rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Production of the M2 CS ended in July 2026, as BMW prepared to launch the new M2 xDrive. The all-wheel-drive model is scheduled to enter production in August and is expected to remain available until the G87 generation reportedly ends production in July 2029.
However, the M2 lineup may still have another chapter to come.
What Could the Final G87 M2 Be?
The rumor comes from ynguldyn, a longtime Bimmerpost insider known for accurately reporting future BMW products and production plans. This time, the information is unusually short: “There will be one more version of G87 M2.”
BMW has not provided any additional details, leaving the identity of the potential final variant open to speculation.
An M2 CS With a Manual Transmission?
One possibility would be an M2 equivalent of the new M3 CS Handschalter. That model combines CS upgrades with a six-speed manual transmission, creating a more focused version while retaining an enthusiast-oriented character.
Applying the same formula to the M2 could address one of the biggest criticisms of the existing M2 CS: its lack of a manual gearbox. An M2 CS Handschalter could potentially retain rear-wheel drive while receiving weight-saving components, chassis upgrades and additional power.
BMW Could Also Choose M xDrive
Another possibility is a CS model with all-wheel drive. The M3 CS, M4 CS and M3 CS Touring all use M xDrive, meaning an M2 CS xDrive would fit within BMW’s existing CS formula.
Such a model would also become the quickest-accelerating M2 yet.
M Performance Parts Could Point to Another Special Edition
BMW has also developed an extensive range of M Performance Parts for the G87 M2. The catalog includes carbon-fiber aerodynamic components, special wheels, a prominent fixed rear wing and the controversial center-exit exhaust.
Most of those parts have remained available as standalone options rather than being combined into a factory special edition. BMW could potentially package some of them together with unique paint and interior trim to create a lower-volume M2 without making major mechanical changes.
That approach could produce something similar to Japan’s M2 CS Edge or the first-generation BMW M2 Performance Edition.
Could BMW Build an M2 CSL?
The most ambitious possibility would be an M2 CSL. A lighter, more powerful and more aggressively tuned version would give the G87 a true halo model while bringing it closer to the formula used by its larger sibling, the G82.
The CSL badge would bring significant expectations, but the M2’s compact dimensions and familiar G8X layout, including rear-wheel drive and the S58 engine, provide an encouraging starting point. BMW also has not ruled out an M2 CSL outright.
BMW Has Not Confirmed Another M2
For now, the only claim is that one more G87 M2 variant is coming. BMW has not announced its name, drivetrain or production schedule, nor has the automaker acknowledged that another version exists.
The possibilities could also relate to prototypes spotted testing as recently as last month, including a camouflaged M2 CS. Until BMW provides official confirmation, however, any new G87 M2 remains speculation.
