The all-new Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero is nearing its comeback, and new details about its design philosophy are emerging from the project’s head designer. Norihiko Yoshimine, Program Design Director for the Pajero/Montero project, says the new model is being developed around two core ideas: heritage and evolution.

Designing a New Pajero Without Losing Its Identity

Yoshimine recently discussed the philosophy behind the all-new Pajero/Montero, revealing that Mitsubishi’s 2019 announcement about ending the Pajero personally affected him. His own automotive design journey was also inspired by the model.

When Yoshimine was assigned to the Pajero/Montero revival project, he said the first priority was to “understand what the Pajero/Montero represented to people worldwide and why it had remained a cherished icon for so long.”

The goal, however, was not simply to bring the model back. The design team wanted the new vehicle to appear distinctly new at first glance while remaining recognizable as a Pajero.

That approach ultimately led to the two central design philosophies of heritage and evolution. The team sought to advance the design language that had defined previous generations while creating a form that looks confidently toward the future.

Heritage Meets Modern Technology

Among the design elements highlighted by Yoshimine are strong horizontal lines and a pronounced sense of solidity intended to showcase the vehicle’s capability.

The interior is also designed to preserve the “spirit” of the original model while incorporating the advanced technologies of today.

What to Expect From the New Pajero/Montero

Beyond its design, several details about the upcoming Pajero/Montero have already been reported. The new model will use a ladder-frame chassis, a construction approach Mitsubishi dropped for the third and fourth generations of the nameplate.

The vehicle will also feature the iconic triple multi-meter display for altitude, roll and pitch.

Another key feature will be Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control system, the all-wheel-drive technology first used on the final Lancer Evolution.

Electrified Powertrain Could Join the Lineup

Reports have also indicated that the new Pajero/Montero could receive an electrified powertrain option, potentially giving buyers an alternative to a pure diesel engine.

The Pajero project is also likely to spawn a RAV4-sized competitor positioned as a more rugged and off-road-focused model.

With its design centered on heritage and evolution, the all-new Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero is being developed to retain the identity of a cherished nameplate while introducing a distinctly new appearance and modern technology.
