Hyundai Motor America is strengthening its commitment to child passenger safety through a new partnership with Seattle Children’s designed to expand access to free car seat education and inspection events across Washington state.
Through its Hyundai Hope corporate social responsibility initiative, Hyundai is providing $25,000 in funding to support Seattle Children’s efforts over the next two years. The investment is expected to help the hospital expand its child passenger safety services to approximately 300 families in underserved communities in South King County.
The initiative will focus on parents, caregivers, infants, and young children who may have limited access to professional car seat installation guidance and safety resources.
Hyundai and Seattle Children’s Target Child Passenger Safety
The partnership addresses a significant issue facing families across the United States: car seats are frequently installed or used incorrectly.
“Helping keep children safe on the road starts with ensuring families have access to the education and resources they need,” said Cole Stutz, chief safety officer of Hyundai Motor North America.
He added that the partnership with Seattle Children’s will provide hands-on car seat safety education designed to help parents and caregivers travel with greater confidence.
The program combines professional instruction with practical demonstrations, allowing families to learn how to correctly install and use child safety seats in their own vehicles.
Nearly Half of Car Seats Are Used Incorrectly
Proper car seat installation is an important part of protecting young passengers during a crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly half of car seats and booster seats are installed incorrectly or used improperly.
Using a car seat that is appropriate for a child’s age and size, while ensuring it is correctly installed, can significantly reduce the risk of serious injury.
Federal safety data indicates that properly securing children in appropriate car seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants younger than 1 year old and by 54% for children between 1 and 4 years old.
These figures highlight why accessible car seat education and professional inspections remain important, particularly for families who may not have easy access to certified safety technicians.
Free Car Seat Inspections Available in Washington
Seattle Children’s already provides free community car seat checks throughout the year in Federal Way, Seattle, and Bellevue.
During these events, certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians work directly with parents and caregivers. Rather than simply checking whether a seat appears to be installed correctly, technicians provide hands-on instruction and explain how families can safely install and use their child’s seat.
The inspections can also identify other potential safety problems.
Technicians check whether car seats are expired or subject to recalls and can provide replacement seats when necessary. This approach gives families access to both education and practical resources that can help improve child passenger safety.
Hyundai’s financial support will allow Seattle Children’s to expand these services into additional communities in South King County.
Reaching 300 Families in Underserved Communities
The expanded initiative is expected to serve approximately 300 families over the next two years.
South King County includes communities where access to specialized child passenger safety resources may be limited. Bringing free inspection events directly into these communities can make it easier for parents and caregivers to receive professional assistance without having to travel long distances or pay for private services.
Isabell Sakamoto, manager of community health at Seattle Children’s, expressed appreciation for Hyundai Hope’s investment.
She said the funding will allow Seattle Children’s to expand community car seat check events into South King County while bringing safety resources and hands-on guidance directly to families who need them.
The partnership also demonstrates how collaboration between healthcare organizations and automotive companies can address preventable safety risks outside traditional hospital settings.
What Parents Can Expect at a Car Seat Safety Event
Families attending a Seattle Children’s car seat inspection event can receive individualized assistance from certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians.
The process can include:
- Reviewing the child’s car seat for proper use.
- Checking whether the seat is installed correctly.
- Providing hands-on installation guidance.
- Explaining appropriate car seat use based on the child’s age and size.
- Checking for expired or recalled seats.
- Providing replacement seats when needed.
- Answering questions from parents and caregivers about child passenger safety.
This hands-on approach is particularly valuable because small installation mistakes can affect how effectively a child restraint system protects a young passenger during a collision.
Seattle Hyundai Helps Connect Families With Safety Resources
Hyundai’s local dealer network is also playing a role in extending the company’s community safety efforts.
Jim Walen, owner and dealer principal of Seattle Hyundai, said the dealership was proud to help connect local families with resources focused on child passenger safety.
He described the initiative as an example of Hyundai’s broader commitment to programs designed to improve the lives of families and strengthen communities.
Local dealerships can provide an important connection between national corporate initiatives and the communities where families live. By supporting awareness and helping direct parents toward available resources, dealerships can help extend the reach of child safety programs.
Hyundai Hope Expands Its Focus on Child Safety
The Washington initiative is part of Hyundai’s broader commitment to improving child safety and supporting healthier communities.
Through partnerships with children’s hospitals across the country, Hyundai works to provide access to car seat inspections, child passenger safety education, and essential safety resources.
The goal is not simply to distribute safety information but to give caregivers practical knowledge they can apply when transporting children every day.
For parents, correct car seat use can be one of the most important steps they take to protect young passengers. However, knowing which seat to use and installing it correctly can sometimes be challenging. Professional guidance can help close that knowledge gap.
Why Proper Car Seat Installation Matters
A child restraint system is designed to work as part of a complete safety system. That means choosing the right type of seat, positioning the child correctly, following the manufacturer’s instructions, and installing the restraint properly.
An improperly installed car seat may not provide the intended level of protection in a crash.
That is why programs offering free professional inspections can be particularly valuable to families. They give caregivers an opportunity to have their questions answered and receive personalized guidance based on their child’s needs and vehicle.
Hyundai and Seattle Children’s are now expanding that opportunity to more families in South King County.
A Broader Commitment to Safer Roads for Children
The new collaboration illustrates how targeted community programs can complement broader efforts to improve road safety.
With Hyundai’s $25,000 investment, Seattle Children’s plans to expand free car seat safety services to approximately 300 families over the next two years. The program will bring certified safety expertise and practical education closer to underserved communities in South King County.
For parents and caregivers, the initiative offers more than a routine inspection. It provides an opportunity to learn how to properly protect children every time they travel by car.
As Hyundai continues its child safety initiatives through Hyundai Hope and partnerships with healthcare organizations, the company is positioning child passenger safety as an important part of its broader community responsibility efforts.
