Lucid Motors is recalling 27,185 Air sedans in the United States after identifying an exterior lighting circuit defect that can overheat and potentially cause a fire. The recall covers nearly every Air sold in the U.S. since the model launched in late 2021 and also addresses possible failures involving exterior lights and the center rear brake light.

Three Lucid Air Fires Reported

The recall affects Lucid Air sedans from model years 2022 through 2026. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem involves insufficient countercurrent protection in an exterior lighting circuit, creating a risk that the circuit could overheat.

In addition to the potential fire risk, the defect can cause the center rear brake light or front lights to stop working. Reduced visibility at night could increase the risk of a crash.

Lucid first identified the issue in June 2023, when a company-owned 2023 Lucid Air caught fire in its front left corner. The automaker worked with a third-party expert to investigate the incident.

“No definitive root cause was established, but the expert was unable to eliminate the front combination lamp as a potential cause,” the NHTSA recall report says.

Another 2022 Lucid Air caught fire in March 2025, with the fire likely originating in the front left light blade controller. In May 2026, a Lucid customer reported another fire that began in the left front corner of a 2024 Air.

That brings the reported total to three fires over three years, all involving front lighting. NHTSA also said Lucid’s investigation identified four Lucid Air incidents between October 2025 and April 2026 in which customers reported smoke.

Recall Linked to Overheating Lighting Circuits

The smoke incidents were traced to an overheating circuit associated with the center high mounted stop lamp. Lucid also identified 33 additional warranty reports involving damage to the CHMSL wire harness.

Further investigation found gaps in the electrical overcurrent protection for certain low-voltage exterior lighting circuits.

Because of the potential fire risk, the NHTSA recall notice states that “owners are advised to park their vehicle outside and away from structures until the recall remedy is completed.”

Lucid Air Recall Fix Uses an Over-the-Air Update

Lucid has released a free over-the-air software update to address the problem. The remedy enhances the vehicle’s software protection against overcurrent conditions and overheating.

Lucid released software version 2.10.0 in July 2026. The update lowers eFuse amperage while disabling “retry logic that could allow a faulted circuit to be re-energized more than once within the same key cycle.”

Although affected Air owners can receive the fix remotely, official notification letters are not expected to arrive by mail until mid-October.

Lucid Air Recall Details

The affected Air sedans were produced between Oct. 11, 2021, and Jul. 27, 2026. Lucid’s recall number is SR-26-06-0.

Owners can contact Lucid at 1-888-995-8243 or the NHTSA hotline at 1-888-327-4236. Additional information is available at www.nhtsa.gov.

The software-based remedy means Lucid can address the recall remotely rather than requiring physical repairs. Even so, the safety recall adds another disruption for the automaker and its customers as Lucid continues to deal with the issues surrounding its vehicle lineup and resources.
