Rivian has updated its 2027 R1 lineup with a simplified trim structure, a new seating configuration, revised wheel-and-tire equipment, and a new paint color. The California-based automaker also answered customer questions about the changes as buyers navigate a more challenging U.S. EV market where hybrids have gained momentum.
What Changed for the 2027 Rivian R1?
Rivian’s 2027 updates include several changes across the R1T and R1S. The lineup now features a simplified trim structure, while the R1S gains second-row captain’s chairs, an option that customers have requested for some time.
The R1T Premium also receives a standard 20-inch Adventure All-Season wheel-and-tire setup. In addition, Rivian has introduced a new paint color for the R1 lineup.
The new second-row captain’s chairs give the R1S a six-seat configuration with a center pass-through. The feature is not available in the Lucid Gravity, while the Cadillac Escalade IQ offers an available Executive Second Row package.
Rivian Simplifies Its R1 Trim Names
Rivian was also asked about the previous Dual- and Tri-Motor designations. Those powertrains now fall under the Premium and Performance trims, respectively, aligning the R1 naming structure with the R2.
As Rivian explained, “So the language is consistent across the Rivian family.” The Esker Silver paint introduced on the R2 also replaces LA Silver on the R1.
Which 2027 R1 Is Right for You?
Rivian outlined five recommendations based on different customer needs.
Premium Long Range: Rivian recommends this configuration for customers who take longer trips. It delivers the highest EPA-estimated range in the lineup, with up to 410 miles for the R1S and 420 miles for the R1T.
R1S Premium with captain’s chairs: Rivian says this version is suited to customers with a full house and plenty of gear. Its six-seat layout includes a center pass-through and cargo capacity.
R1T Premium with 20-inch Adventure All-Season wheels and tires: This setup is aimed at customers whose homes may be accessed by dirt, gravel, mud, or another unpaved driveway. Rivian says it provides more traction, although it reduces range.
On the R1T Premium Long Range, the more rugged setup lowers EPA-estimated range by 40 miles, from 420 miles with the 22-inch road wheels to 380 miles.
Quad: Buyers seeking maximum performance can choose the Quad, which uses four motors and produces 1,025 horsepower. Rivian lists a 0-to-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds.
Performance: Customers looking for a middle ground can choose the Performance trim, which offers 850 horsepower, up to 371 miles of EPA-estimated range, and an upscale interior.
2027 R1 Interior Options
The second-row bench remains available for customers who want a seven-seat R1S configuration. It is offered with both R1S Premium interiors and with Black Mountain Signature on the R1S Performance and Quad.
Premium buyers can choose between Black Mountain and Ocean Coast interiors. Performance and Quad models receive three Signature versions, including the Slate Sky Signature option, which features gray tones, plaid accents, and walnut trim.
Rivian Keeps R1 Capabilities Intact
Despite the changes to the lineup, Rivian says the reshuffle has not removed any of the R1 lineup’s core capabilities.
Pricing starts at $79,990 for the R1T and $83,990 for the R1S, before a $1,895 destination charge. Both models can now be configured on Rivian’s customer-facing website alongside the R2, the brand’s latest addition to its lineup and expected volume seller.
