The BMW iX5 could add another powertrain option to BMW’s already broad X5 lineup, with a range-extended version reportedly expected by 2028. Details remain limited, but a Chinese automotive publication says the model could use a B48 2.0-liter turbo engine to power its generators.

BMW X5 Already Offers Five Powertrain Options

The BMW X5 currently has five powertrain options: gas, diesel, plug-in hybrid, full electric and, soon, hydrogen. That gives buyers a wide range of choices for how their X5 is powered.

The G65 X5 has perhaps the widest selection of powertrain options among its peers. BMW could soon expand that range further with a sixth option.

Range-Extended BMW iX5 Reportedly Coming

Reports late last year indicated that BMW could be considering range extenders for its electric vehicles. At the time, the iX5 and i7 were identified as potential candidates because their sizes could accommodate the relatively bulky arrangement.

Now, Chinese auto website Autohome reports that a range-extended iX5 could be on the way. The publication provides limited details but claims the vehicle is expected by 2028.

Autohome also reports that BMW could use the B48 2.0-liter turbo as the engine powering the vehicle’s generators.

BMW Previously Said Range Extenders Were Not Needed

The potential arrival of a range-extended iX5 would come only a few months after BMW said it did not need range extenders for its EVs.

The German automaker pointed to its range of plug-in hybrid vehicles while also expressing confidence in its existing battery technology, as demonstrated by the iX3.

According to EPA ratings, the iX3 can travel up to 434 miles on a full charge. Real-world testing has produced even higher figures, with one test recording 485 miles from a full charge.

Range Extenders Gain Attention

BMW’s reported consideration of a range extender comes as the technology has gained traction elsewhere. Chinese automakers have a particularly strong presence in the space, with nearly every EV they produce having an accompanying range-extended version.

Nissan has its proprietary e-Power technology, which has been well received in Europe and Asia. Stellantis is also preparing to roll out the Ram 1500 Ramcharger and Jeep Grand Wagoneer REEV.

Range-Extended iX5 Reportedly Limited to China

Autohome reports that the range-extended iX5 will be a China-market exclusive, with no plans to export it to other markets in the near future.

However, the report indicates that a positive reception could create a possibility for the model to reach other countries. For now, the reported range-extended iX5 remains tied to the Chinese market, with its expected arrival listed as 2028.
