Tesla appears to be clearing space in its online shop, with the automaker’s in-house vinyl-wrap program no longer listed for the Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck. The removal comes as Tesla continues to navigate slower-than-expected U.S. electric vehicle demand.
Tesla Vinyl Wrap Listings Disappear
The development was first highlighted by X user Phoenix Self-Driving. Listings for Tesla’s vinyl-wrap service for the Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck also appear to have disappeared from the company’s online shop.
Tesla has not issued an official statement about the change, leaving it unclear whether the removal is permanent. If the program has been discontinued, it would bring an end to a short-lived service that launched in the U.S. in late 2023.
How Tesla’s Wrap Program Changed
According to Not a Tesla App, Tesla initially launched the program using urethane-based paint protection film, which offered more protection than traditional vinyl.
A clear option was priced at $5,000, while colored versions cost between $7,500 and $8,000. The program later expanded to the Cybertruck, before Tesla reduced prices and moved to less expensive traditional vinyl.
The changes may have indicated that the program was struggling to gain traction. It was reportedly offered in only two states while competing with numerous aftermarket shops.
Among those competitors is Unplugged Performance, which showcases wrap projects across Tesla’s entire lineup. The California-based tuner has also demonstrated its capabilities with an off-road-ready Cybertruck finished in a desert-inspired colored PPF.
XPEL Protection Film Remains Available
Tesla continues to list XPEL paint protection film in its online shop. The product is installed by certified XPEL dealers and is focused more on protecting vehicles than changing their appearance.
XPEL’s film is thicker than vinyl and can self-heal minor scratches and swirl marks when exposed to heat.
More Products Reportedly Removed
The vinyl-wrap program is not the only product reportedly removed from Tesla’s online shop. Other items include:
- Model 3 Door Pocket and Cupholder Liners
- Model S 19-inch Magnetite Wheel and Winter Tire Package
- Model X/Y Ski/Snowboard Carrier for Hitch Rack
- Electric Summer Party Tee
- Electric Summer Tee
Tesla Continues Its Broader Push
The shop changes are unlikely to affect Tesla’s efforts to compete for U.S. sales. Still, removing a niche, labor-intensive service could allow the company to focus resources on higher-priority vehicle and service operations.
Tesla is preparing the Cybercab for commercial launch while continuing development of its Optimus humanoid robot, as the automaker focuses on other areas of its business.
