An electric Land Rover Defender prototype has been spotted under heavy camouflage in England, offering another sign that electrification development is continuing across the Land Rover lineup. A charging port and UK vehicle records identifying the prototype as electric have fueled speculation about what the camouflaged SUV could represent.

The Plugged-In Defender

Electrification is well underway at Land Rover, with more battery-electric test vehicles continuing to emerge. One of the latest sightings involves a heavily camouflaged SUV believed to be a new all-electric Defender.

A charging port on the left rear quarter panel is one of the clearest clues. UK vehicle records accessed through MotorScan also list the prototype as electric.

The spy shots were shared by Richard Pierce in the Facebook group LAND ROVER DEFENDER. Pierce said he spotted what he believes was an electric Defender at Eastnor Castle in England and suggested the vehicle was undergoing off-road testing.

Heavy camouflage makes specific design details difficult to identify, but the apparent off-road testing indicates development is continuing. The timing is notable as changing market demand has led to the discontinuation of EVs such as the battery-electric Ram 1500.

Designed for Off-Road Testing

A walkaround of the prototype shows blacked-out wheels and what appear to be roof-rack crossbars, features consistent with its apparent use at an off-road testing location. Off-road capability remains a defining characteristic of the Defender.

Beyond the charging port, the apparent absence of a prominent traditional grille is also consistent with an all-electric vehicle.

However, reports have indicated that the full-size electric Defender has been delayed until the early 2030s. A smaller Defender model, possibly called the Defender Sport, is expected to arrive sooner.

A Smaller Defender Could Be Behind the Prototype

The smaller Defender is expected to follow the Range Rover Electric and Range Rover Sport Electric, both of which JLR says will launch later this year.

That raises the possibility that the recently spotted vehicle could instead be a development mule connected to the smaller Defender. The model is expected to use the Electrified Modular Architecture, or EMA, which was initially believed to support an all-electric configuration.

JLR has since modified the platform to accommodate a full-hybrid setup, meaning the future off-roader could also eventually be offered with a gasoline engine.

JLR’s Electric Future Takes Shape

Because the original post included no additional details, it remains unclear whether the prototype is a full-size Defender EV test vehicle or a mule related to the smaller Defender.

What is increasingly evident, however, is that JLR’s upcoming EVs are beginning to appear in physical form following repeated delays. Alongside the Range Rover Electric and Range Rover Sport Electric, Range Rover has unveiled a fifth model, the Range Rover GT, which will run exclusively on electricity.

Meanwhile, the era of models such as the E-Type and F-Type has passed, and Jaguar has identified its electric future with the Type 01, a luxury four-door GT expected to produce about 1,000 horsepower. For now, the camouflaged electric Land Rover Defender prototype adds another unanswered question to JLR’s expanding transition toward electrification.
