Porsche could be considering a new flagship supercar positioned above the Porsche 911 as part of its broader effort to reshape the business following sluggish EV sales and shrinking profits. According to a report from Automotive News, the potential halo car could share technology with Audi’s upcoming Nuvolari rather than requiring an entirely new platform.
The German sports car manufacturer is currently undergoing a company-wide shakeup and has acknowledged that its restructuring has been painful, while maintaining that the changes are beginning to produce results.
A New Porsche Flagship Above the 911
The idea of a Porsche flagship positioned above the 911 has continued to resurface. The proposed model would not replace the 911 but instead serve as a rarer, more expensive and more exclusive halo car, potentially acting as a spiritual successor to the 918 Spyder.
Automotive News reports that Porsche is considering technology from Audi’s upcoming Nuvolari for the project. No final decision has been made, however, and Porsche executives are reportedly expected to consider the matter after the summer break.
Audi Nuvolari Could Provide the Foundation
The reported strategy could allow Porsche to avoid developing an entirely new platform from scratch. Audi’s Nuvolari is expected to arrive in 2027 as a limited-run, mid-engine supercar built at the Böllinger Höfe factory in Germany.
Only 499 examples are expected to be produced. The Nuvolari is also expected to deliver about 1,001 horsepower and share its underlying architecture with the Lamborghini Temerario.
That shared platform would spread engineering costs across multiple Volkswagen Group brands, potentially making low-volume, high-performance vehicles easier to justify financially.
Platform Sharing Could Reduce Development Costs
A Porsche version of the formula could offer similar advantages. By using components and technology already developed for Audi and Lamborghini, Porsche could potentially reduce development costs while creating a high-margin halo car produced in limited numbers.
Such an approach could be particularly attractive as Porsche looks for ways to improve profits without relying solely on higher vehicle sales.
For now, however, the reported Porsche supercar remains unconfirmed. The information comes from Automotive News rather than Porsche itself, although platform sharing within the Volkswagen Group is already an established practice.
Porsche Has Previously Discussed a 918 Spyder Successor
This is not the first indication that Porsche has considered creating a supercar positioned above the 911. Earlier this year, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume acknowledged that the company had been evaluating a successor to the 918 Spyder.
Blume suggested there was room in Porsche’s lineup for a flagship model capable of going beyond what the 911 offers, even as the latest 911 continues to narrow the distinction between a sports car and a supercar.
That earlier acknowledgment gives additional context to the latest report. A new halo car could provide Porsche with a flagship model that sits above the 911 while showcasing the brand’s latest performance technology and benefiting from shared Volkswagen Group engineering.
Until Porsche formally approves such a project, however, a Nuvolari-based flagship remains a report rather than a confirmed product. Despite the potential space for a model above the 911, including alongside the current 911 Turbo S, Porsche has yet to announce a final decision.
