The sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 may receive its first update sooner than expected, with a report from Japan indicating that Toyota could introduce new terrain settings for all-wheel-drive hybrid models in 2027.

Multi-Terrain Select Could Reach Hybrid Models

According to Creative Trend, the 2027 RAV4 will replace the existing Trail mode on AWD hybrids with two new terrain settings: Mud & Sand and Snow & Dirt.

The additional drive modes would mark a notable change for hybrid RAV4 models. Until now, those terrain-specific settings have been associated with gasoline-powered AWD RAV4s equipped with a mechanical link between the axles.

Hybrid models, which use electric rear motors, have instead relied on a more basic traction-control setup and controlled power delivery. In the American Woodland trim, those settings are currently called Trail and Snow modes.

New Drive Modes Would Adjust AWD and Traction Systems

Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select system adjusts the AWD system, brakes, and traction control to better suit different driving surfaces and provide additional grip in slippery conditions.

The report says the technology could return for the new-generation RAV4 hybrids after not being included in the previous version. However, it remains unclear exactly how the new settings would differ from the drive modes already available on the more rugged RAV4 trims.

The reported update appears to focus exclusively on driving capability. Creative Trend says there are no significant changes expected to the RAV4’s exterior design or cabin, including new paint colors or trim updates.

Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid Production Timelines Differ

Production timing is expected to vary by powertrain. Hybrid RAV4 production is reportedly scheduled to begin in November 2026, while plug-in hybrid production is expected to start in January 2027.

Could North America Receive the Same Upgrade?

For now, the reported change appears to be limited to Japan. Toyota has not announced plans to bring the new drive modes to North American RAV4 models.

If the features eventually reach North America, the RAV4 Woodland would appear to be a likely candidate. The adventure-focused trim already features chunky tires, increased ground clearance, outdoors-oriented styling, and the existing Trail and Snow modes.

Adding Mud & Sand and Snow & Dirt settings could expand the Woodland’s terrain-focused capabilities for drivers using dirt roads, trails, or snowy surfaces.

Questions Remain for Existing RAV4 Owners

Creative Trend also noted that it remains unclear whether Toyota could introduce the new Multi-Terrain Select system to existing RAV4 models in Japan through a software update.

If the changes are entirely digital, such an update may be possible, but Toyota has not made anything official. For now, the reported 2027 Toyota RAV4 update appears centered on expanding terrain settings for hybrid models without broader changes to the vehicle’s design or interior.
