Ford CEO Jim Farley has shared new images and video showing two Ford Fathom electric pickup prototypes undergoing hot-weather testing in the Nevada desert, offering another look at the automaker’s upcoming sub-$30,000 EV ahead of its planned reveal early next year.

Ford announced last month that its all-new electric pickup will carry the Fathom name and start at $28,350. Including a $1,595 destination charge, the truck will start at $29,945, keeping its entry price below $30,000.

Ford Builds Anticipation for the Fathom

The prototypes shown by Farley on X, formerly Twitter, were wrapped in psychedelic camouflage during testing and also made a stop in Las Vegas. Despite the camouflage, writing on the sides of the development vehicles was clearly visible and appeared designed to build anticipation for the upcoming reveal.

One decal confirms that the “Camo [Comes] Off in 2027,” while another indicates that preorders will open early next year. The most prominent message on the prototypes reads: “This Changes Everything.”

Ford Fathom Promises a Different Take on Affordable EV Pickups

The mid-size Fathom is larger than the slightly more expensive Maverick, which is already a popular and affordable vehicle, while carrying a lower starting price.

As an affordable electric pickup, the Fathom is already drawing comparisons with the upcoming Slate Truck. However, Ford’s offering is positioned differently, with a finished, technology-focused package that includes electric windows and an infotainment system.

The Ford Fathom will also come with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Apple Maps and bi-directional charging.

Fathom and Slate Truck Take Different Approaches

The Slate Auto truck is expected to arrive slightly earlier, with some customer deliveries planned before the end of 2026. It is priced at $24,950, or $26,400 including a $1,450 freight charge.

Slate’s truck is expected to offer 205 miles of range from a 63kWh battery. The Fathom, meanwhile, is expected to eventually deliver around 300 miles of range.

The Fathom is also expected to be quicker and more comfortable overall, while Ford’s expansive dealer network provides another distinction between the two upcoming electric pickups.

Ford Fathom Targets Work and Family Buyers

The Fathom will be the first vehicle built on the Ford Universal EV Platform. It will use a lithium iron phosphate battery and send power to the rear wheels as standard.

A second motor supplying power to the front axle will be available for buyers who need all-wheel drive, along with a larger battery expected to use a more advanced chemistry.

Ford expects customers to use the truck for a range of applications, including work duties and everyday family transportation. Every Fathom will also come standard with BlueCruise hands-free driving.

Ford Looks to Expand the Appeal of Affordable Pickups

With a starting price below $30,000, an expected range of around 300 miles, available all-wheel drive and a technology-focused feature set, the Ford Fathom is being positioned to appeal to multiple types of buyers.

Ford’s latest prototype testing keeps attention on the electric pickup as the company prepares for preorders early next year and the removal of camouflage in 2027.
