The Scout Traveler is taking shape with two dramatically different concepts designed to carry the Scout legacy into the electric age. Scout Motors will unveil the Mountainside and Trail-Ready concepts alongside the Scout Terra pickup at the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Experience in Colorado.

Scout Traveler Builds on a Legacy

The Scout name carries a serious reputation rooted in the original International Harvester Scout, which was built as a dependable vehicle for people who needed to get things done.

Now under Volkswagen, Scout Motors is bringing that legacy into the electric era while targeting a broader audience. Instead of presenting one conventional concept, the brand is showing two distinct interpretations of the upcoming Traveler SUV.

Together, the concepts offer the clearest look yet at how Scout intends to preserve the vehicle’s character while appealing to buyers with different priorities.

Mountainside Concept Takes a More Refined Approach

The Mountainside concept presents a more comfortable and polished interpretation of the Traveler while retaining its boxy, outdoors-focused design.

Its Morning Dusk paint is a charcoal-brown shade that changes with the light, revealing hints of gold in the sun. The concept rides on 22-inch black Vault wheels fitted with 35-inch tires, while a panoramic glass roof adds to its upscale character.

Inside, Scout uses an Alpine District theme featuring semi-aniline leather, woven gray fabrics, recycled walnut trim and warm accent colors. The cabin takes inspiration from a lodge rather than a work truck.

Plaid seat inserts and houndstooth fabric on the headliner reference classic Scout interiors, while physical buttons, rugged metal door handles and stainless steel speaker grilles featuring the Harvester pattern connect the concept to the brand’s utilitarian roots.

Trail-Ready Concept Embraces Off-Roading

The Trail-Ready concept takes a much more rugged direction. Finished in matte Galvanized Steel with a Canvas roof, it features equipment designed specifically for off-road use.

The concept includes metal bumpers, a built-in winch, tow hitch, rock rails and a roof rack with trail lights. It also has a spare tire carrier capable of carrying extra fuel, along with 18-inch beadlock wheels and 35-inch off-road tires.

Another standout feature is the black Cabana Top, which creates an open-air experience and recalls the removable-roof design associated with classic Scouts.

Denim District Interior Focuses on Durable Materials

Inside, the Trail-Ready concept uses Scout’s Denim District theme, drawing inspiration from American workwear.

Brick Red leather covers the seats, dashboard, armrests and grab handles, while denim-style fabric is used for the seat inserts, door panels and accessory straps. The approach offers a different interpretation of premium design, emphasizing durable materials rather than polished finishes.

Scout Traveler Production Targets 2028

Scout said its new South Carolina factory is nearly ready, with more than 4,000 people set to build both the Traveler SUV and Terra pickup.

Early prototypes are already undergoing testing, while full-scale production and customer deliveries remain on track for 2028.
