Polestar has unveiled an early look at its new Formula 2030 concept, a model the Swedish performance brand says will define an entire generation of its design. The teaser arrives despite Polestar being banned from selling cars in the U.S., with the company preparing to introduce the new styling on future mainstream models.

Polestar Formula 2030 Brings an Aggressive Evolution

Polestar has released only a shadowy view of the concept’s front end, but the image offers a first look at how the brand plans to evolve its design language. The new direction builds on the split Thor’s hammer headlight motif that initially helped distinguish Polestar from Volvo.

Philipp Römers, Polestar’s head of design, said, “Polestar’s design and brand is already so strong, it was obvious we needed a bold evolution, not revolution, of what came before.”

According to Polestar, the new concept “[respects] brand-defining elements like the familiar Dual Blade headlights ensuring it remains recognizably a Polestar with a strong, characterful identity.”

The Formula 2030 teaser shows several distinctive elements, including a blade-like piece between the headlights reminiscent of the Lucid Air. Beneath it appears to be an air channel similar to the one used by the Dodge Charger Daytona EV, while a single windshield wiper sits in the center.

A cutout in the roof also appears to indicate a possible location for LiDAR, which is associated with autonomous driving functionality.

New Design Will Debut on Polestar 2 and Polestar 7

The new design might seem suited to the Polestar 6, the brand’s 911-rivaling sports coupe. However, the Polestar 6 has been delayed in favor of more mainstream models, meaning the new design language will debut elsewhere in the lineup.

For now, Polestar will show the Formula 2030 concept privately to investors. A full reveal is scheduled for later this year.

After that, Polestar has confirmed that the design language will debut on the new Polestar 2, which is planned for a global launch in 2027. It will also appear on the Polestar 7, a new crossover SUV previously teased by the brand.

Polestar Moves Forward Despite U.S. Sales Ban

Volvo and Polestar share Chinese ownership, but only Polestar was banned from selling cars in the U.S. The ban came shortly before the launch of the new Polestar 4 SUV.

Despite that setback, the Formula 2030 concept shows Polestar continuing to develop its brand and design direction. The company is looking toward new models and a renewed identity rather than remaining defined solely by its origins as a brand spun off from Volvo.

The Formula 2030 concept will receive its full reveal later this year, followed by the introduction of its design language on the new Polestar 2 and Polestar 7.
