Tesla has released FSD v14.3.9, a new update designed to add another layer of protection against potential collisions by allowing the system to intervene when it determines that automatic emergency braking and the driver’s response may not be enough.
Tesla Expands Its Autonomous Driving Safety Features
Tesla’s effort to become a leader in fully autonomous driving has been challenging. While other automakers have followed suit and begun developing their own systems, Tesla was among the first to introduce the technology to the public.
Over the years, however, Tesla has faced public criticism and several setbacks as the technology experienced what the report described as “hiccups.”
Autonomous driving technology has since gained broader acceptance, with regulators and automakers reaching agreements allowing the technology to operate under certain conditions. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) suite remains one of the leading systems in the industry, and its latest update is aimed specifically at reducing human error.
What Tesla FSD v14.3.9 Does
Tesla’s newly released FSD v14.3.9 update allows the system to take control of the vehicle even when the driver is actively piloting it.
In a post on X, Tesla AI explained that the system can activate on the driver’s behalf when it detects an imminent collision and determines that the automatic emergency braking system, or AEB, may not be sufficient.
If the FSD system concludes that AEB alone cannot prevent the danger, it can take over and maneuver the vehicle away from the potential collision. The system may also engage if it determines that the driver is heavily distracted.
The update goes beyond automatic emergency braking by using steering, braking, and acceleration inputs in an effort to avoid an accident as much as possible when the system takes control.
A Last-Resort Safety Intervention
Tesla emphasized that the new capability is intended as a last-resort option. If the system activates and takes control, it will immediately alert the driver and request a return to manual driving mode once the emergency situation has been safely passed.
While the feature may appear intrusive, the new FSD update adds another protective layer for situations in which a driver is unable to react properly to an impending incident.
With FSD v14.3.9, Tesla is expanding the system’s ability to respond during critical moments, using steering, braking and acceleration when additional intervention is needed beyond automatic emergency braking.
