Some cars can rack up extraordinary mileage, but reaching 250,000 miles remains uncommon. A study by online car marketplace ISeeCars.com found that Toyota vehicles are the most likely to reach that milestone, while several European luxury brands ranked among the least likely.

Toyota Leads the 250,000-Mile Study

ISeeCars analyzed odometer readings from more than 395 million cars in the U.S., along with their model years. The study excluded heavy-duty vehicles and vehicles with limited data, then calculated the average likelihood of vehicles from each brand reaching 250,000 miles.

Across all brands, the average chance of reaching 250,000 miles was 5.4%. Only five brands performed better than that overall figure.

Toyota ranked first, with a 19.7% chance of reaching the mileage milestone. Its luxury brand, Lexus, followed at 14.4%, while Honda and Acura ranked third and fourth at 13.3% and 9.5%, respectively.

GMC rounded out the five brands that exceeded the overall average, recording a 5.8% chance. It was the only American brand to finish above the average.

Chevrolet, despite selling nearly identical trucks as GMC, ranked 11th overall with a 3.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles.

The Rest of the Top 10

The remaining brands in ISeeCars’ top 10 all fell below the 5.4% overall average, although several came relatively close.

Mazda ranked sixth with a 5.3% chance, nearly matching the overall average. Lincoln followed in seventh at 4.7%.

Ram, Ford and Cadillac occupied the final three spots in the top 10.

European Luxury Brands Rank Near the Bottom

European luxury brands dominated the bottom 10 of the study. Maserati, Mini and Jaguar each recorded a 0% chance of reaching 250,000 miles.

Fiat, Porsche, Land Rover, Audi and BMW also appeared among the bottom 10. BMW had the strongest result among those brands, with a 0.5% chance of reaching the mileage milestone.

Mercedes-Benz and Volvo posted the highest likelihoods among the European brands at the lower end of the rankings, with each recording a 2.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles.

Subaru Falls Below Expectations

One of the more notable results came from Subaru. Despite the brand’s reputation for reliability and long life, it ranked as the second-lowest Japanese brand in the study, with a 2.8% chance of reaching 250,000 miles.

That figure was lower than Nissan’s but significantly higher than Mitsubishi, which was the lowest-ranked Japanese automaker.

The ISeeCars study shows that the likelihood of reaching 250,000 miles varies significantly by automaker, with Toyota leading the brands analyzed and several European luxury marques recording the lowest results.
