The 2028 Volvo XC40 is receiving a major refresh that brings updated exterior styling, subtle interior changes, a larger infotainment screen, new technology and several safety improvements. Volvo describes it as “the best version of the XC40 yet.”
Thor’s Hammer Gets a Simpler Look
The refreshed XC40 follows a design trend toward simpler and bolder headlight graphics. Its headlights now feature a darker background, while Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer running-light motif has been simplified.
The refresh also includes a new grille, new LED rear lights, an upgraded tailgate and a redesigned rear bumper. New 18-inch, 19-inch and 20-inch diamond-cut wheel designs are also available.
Despite the changes, Volvo has kept the XC40’s overall character focused on elegance rather than the more aggressive styling seen on some other SUVs. The exterior updates help keep the nearly ten-year-old design contemporary and attractive.
A Subtle Interior Refresh
Inside, Volvo continues to follow its Scandinavian-inspired design approach. The company has added new upholstery and decor options, including “Arianne Cardamom leather upholstery paired with Brown Ash wood decor elements across the interior.”
The interior changes are relatively subtle, maintaining the XC40’s existing character while introducing updated materials and trim combinations.
Larger Screen and Updated Technology
The 2028 Volvo XC40 gets a new, larger and sharper 11.2-inch center display. A hands-on look at the system showed a revised user experience that requires fewer taps to reach key functions, while the contextual menu performed more consistently.
Like other new Volvos, the XC40 will support over-the-air updates, allowing new software and features to be delivered to vehicles already on the road.
The infotainment system continues to use Google Built-In as the native system, while Apple CarPlay remains standard.
Volvo Addresses Data Privacy
Volvo was also asked about its approach to vehicle data and privacy. The company said, “our policy that we apply to all, all data from the car, whether Google or anything, is that your data belongs to you, and you can opt in to share it, but we will not share it with anyone ever without your permission.”
New Safety Features for 2028
Safety remains a key part of the XC40 refresh, with Volvo describing its approach as providing assistance when drivers need it without unnecessarily intervening.
Thomas Broberg, Senior Technical Advisor at Volvo Cars Safety Center, explained the philosophy: “Our philosophy is that we should be there as a helping hand when you need it. We don’t need to step in when you don’t need it. Because if you look at it, as human beings and drivers, we are remarkable in how we actually operate in such a complex environment like traffic.”
Door Opening Alert
The new Door Opening Alert is designed to help protect cyclists and other road users by warning occupants before they open a door into passing traffic.
Expanded Pilot Assist
Optional Pilot Assist now adds lane change assist and has been refined to follow the road more smoothly, providing additional support and comfort during longer journeys.
Upgraded 360-Degree Camera
The optional 360 camera has also been upgraded with a 3D view, making parking and low-speed maneuvers easier.
The 2028 Volvo XC40 combines its refreshed exterior and interior with a larger infotainment display, over-the-air software updates, standard Apple CarPlay and new safety technologies, while maintaining Volvo’s emphasis on elegant design and driver assistance.
