Hybrid cars are emerging as the go-to powertrain for U.S. buyers as rising fuel prices reshape consumer preferences and major automakers increase inventories to meet growing demand.
Hybrids Lead the Market
The shift marks a notable change in buyer behavior. Consumers who were previously reluctant to choose hybrids are now actively seeking them, helping make hybrid powertrains the fastest-selling option on the market.
According to the report, hybrids have been the preferred powertrain for the 5th consecutive month. They also have the lowest supply level, with just 64 days of inventory, even as automakers continue expanding their hybrid stock, particularly over the last month.
The trend comes as fuel prices have risen rapidly, prompting buyers to place greater emphasis on fuel savings when choosing their next vehicle.
EV Supply Falls as Diesel Inventory Rises
Electric vehicles have also regained popularity among buyers, with their days of supply falling 20% to 72 days.
At the same time, diesel-powered vehicles have seen inventory rise to 114 days as the nation deals with record-high diesel prices.
Midsize SUVs and Crossovers Have the Highest Supply
The report also found that midsize SUVs and crossovers had the highest supply among vehicle classes, with more than 600,000 vehicles on hand.
Full-size pickups ranked second in available inventory, with approximately 358,000 vehicles in stock.
Automakers Expanding Hybrid Inventory
Among the brands highlighted in the report, Toyota Motor, Honda Motor, Subaru, and Hyundai recorded increased sales while also having fewer days of supply.
With hybrids continuing to lead powertrain sales and automakers expanding their inventories, the latest figures underscore the growing demand for vehicles that offer fuel savings.
