Toyota’s GR Kart went on sale across Japan on September 10 at kart tracks and GR Garage locations nationwide, with a price of about $2,500 including tax. Powered by a simple 215cc gas engine, the compact kart measures just 71.7 inches long and was specifically engineered to fit inside a minivan without disassembly.

A Kart Built Like a Toyota

The GR Kart is manufactured at a dedicated workshop in Gamagori, Aichi Prefecture, using Toyota Production System principles and Gazoo Racing expertise.

The kart’s seat and driving position can be adjusted for drivers between 4.4 and 6.1 feet tall, allowing the same vehicle to accommodate both children and parents. A companion app also guides new owners through setup and basic driving tips.

The GR Kart is designed exclusively for closed-course use and has no path to road registration. It also does not follow CIK-FIA competition specifications, instead using minimalist bodywork and small gold wheels that visually echo the GR Yaris.

Why Toyota Is Making a $2,500 Kart

The GR Kart represents a grassroots approach rather than a halo product. Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda, who races under the pseudonym Morizo, has been personally involved in nearly every GR product’s creation since founding Gazoo Racing out of his motorsports obsession in 2007.

Toyoda has said he wants motorsports to become something “more people can take up, like baseball or soccer.” The goal contrasts with the rest of Toyota’s current GR lineup, which includes the $225,000 GR GT.

Toyota’s racing boss recently described the GR GT as the beginning of a “phase two” for the brand, built on the foundation of more accessible GR products. At about $2,500, the GR Kart sits at the most accessible end of that approach.

Not Coming to America Yet

Toyota’s announcement currently covers Japan only, with production based near Nagoya and no mention of U.S. or broader international availability.

For now, Toyota has not announced a U.S. version of the GR Kart. The model remains available in Japan through kart tracks and GR Garage locations nationwide.
