Toyota has patented a system that could allow a car to photograph whatever a driver is looking at without requiring a phone. The technology uses eye tracking to determine the driver’s line of sight and then directs an exterior camera toward the object that caught the driver’s attention.
How Toyota’s Hands-Free Car Camera Could Work
Described in USPTO 2026/0261754 A1, “Systems and Methods for Capturing Driver-Relevant Road Scene Information,” the system combines an interior camera aimed at the driver’s head and eyes with one or more exterior cameras.
A driver could look toward something outside the vehicle, say “take a picture of that billboard,” or press a button on the steering wheel. The onboard computer would then determine the driver’s line of sight and direct an exterior camera toward the selected subject.
The resulting photo would not be stored in the vehicle itself. Instead, the system would save it to a separate mobile device, allowing the driver to review the roadside photos after parking.
Toyota Patent Includes Additional Triggers
Toyota’s filing also describes linking the system with a driver’s phone health records and browsing history to determine what might be worth photographing.
Another possible trigger involves standing instructions. Toyota gives the example, “If you see any classic cars around me, please take a picture.” Under the proposed system, the vehicle could capture those vehicles without requiring the driver to use a phone while driving.
The system is designed around an interior camera that tracks where the driver is looking and exterior cameras that can capture the selected scene. That approach would allow the driver to keep their hands on the wheel while the vehicle handles the photography process.
Toyota’s Patent Targets Driver Distraction
The filing addresses the problem of drivers trying to capture something interesting on the road while also operating a vehicle. Phones are often involved when drivers attempt to take pictures during a drive.
Toyota’s proposed system would instead let the vehicle handle the technical aspects of capturing an image, including determining where to aim the exterior camera. The concept is built around allowing drivers to keep their hands on the wheel while reducing the need to operate a phone.
No Toyota Production Model Has Been Confirmed
As with other automaker patents, Toyota’s filing does not confirm that the technology will reach a production vehicle. The patent reads as an engineering concept rather than a confirmed feature for an upcoming model.
Toyota has not said which model, if any, could eventually receive the system. For now, the patent offers a look at a proposed approach to capturing roadside images while keeping the driver from having to operate a phone during the drive.
