Nissan is ending production of the Nissan Altima and the Rogue Plug-In Hybrid as the automaker reshapes its North American lineup. Company executives said the changes are intended to make room for upcoming models, while the Sentra will become Nissan’s only remaining sedan in the U.S. lineup.

Nissan Altima Ends After Three Decades

In December last year, Nissan announced that the Altima would continue for the 2026 model year. However, the company has now confirmed that the sedan will be discontinued.

Ponz Pandikuthira, Nissan’s Senior Vice President and Chief Product & Planning Officer for North America, told WardsAuto that the $28,825 Altima is being retired after three decades to avoid competing with the new Sentra.

With the Altima leaving the lineup, Nissan will no longer offer what was described as its cheapest American-made sedan. The Sentra will become the brand’s only remaining sedan after the Versa was discontinued and plans for new electric sedans were shelved.

Rogue Plug-In Hybrid Also Leaves the Lineup

Pandikuthira also confirmed that the Mitsubishi Outlander-based Rogue Plug-In Hybrid is being discontinued.

According to the executive, the model had “served its purpose” by providing U.S. customers with a Nissan-badged hybrid option until the company’s own Rogue E-Power arrives for the 2027 model year.

He said Nissan introduced the Rogue Plug-In Hybrid to meet demand for plug-in hybrid vehicles during the transition.

“If people shopping online see that Rogue does not offer a hybrid, they will not go to the dealer. And while it’s relatively expensive because of the subsidy having gone away, it has served that purpose.”

Nissan Continues Lineup Overhaul

As Nissan works to strengthen its position, the company is trimming several models from its portfolio. The departures of the Versa, Maxima, Altima, and the Outlander-based Rogue Plug-In Hybrid are part of that strategy.

According to the report, a total of 11 models are expected to leave Nissan’s lineup.

New Models Planned as Strategy Shifts

While Nissan is reducing its sedan offerings and emphasizing SUVs, new products are planned to replace outgoing models. The company is preparing for the arrival of vehicles including the Xterra.

The report also says recently discovered patent images suggest Nissan is still considering affordable sedans, while the Skyline name is being revived. The Skyline itself is not expected to reach the U.S. under that name, with an Infiniti Q50 based on the same platform instead planned for the American market, potentially with an available retrofit kit to convert it into a Skyline.

Nissan has also indicated it is considering additional sports cars, including a Z Convertible and possibly a Silvia. Before those plans move forward, the automaker is focused on launching the Xterra, Juke EV, and Skyline as part of its broader product strategy. The report also notes that not everyone within the company supports CEO Ivan Espinosa’s approach.

The discontinuation of the Nissan Altima and Rogue Plug-In Hybrid marks another step in the automaker’s ongoing lineup transformation as it prepares to introduce a new generation of models in the years ahead.
