Subaru has issued a safety recall affecting eight 2026 Forester and Crosstrek SUVs after discovering that a front suspension fastener may not have been properly tightened. The defect could cause a ball joint to separate while driving, potentially resulting in a loss of vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall was announced on October 19, 2026. Although it involves only a small number of vehicles, Subaru is instructing affected owners not to drive their SUVs and to arrange towing to a dealership for inspection and repairs.

Which Subaru Forester and Crosstrek Models Are Affected?

The recall covers eight vehicles in total, including four 2026 Subaru Crosstrek models manufactured between August 4 and August 6, and four 2026 Subaru Forester models built between August 5 and August 13.

Subaru identified the affected vehicles through supplier records and traceability procedures. The company determined that the issue involved specific front suspension assemblies installed in the affected SUVs.

The defect centers on the left-hand front lower control arm ball joint castle nut, which may not have been tightened to the required torque specification.

Loose Suspension Fastener Could Cause Loss of Control

According to the investigation, some affected assemblies may have been placed in a finished-goods rack before the final tightening procedure was completed. Those components were subsequently shipped to Subaru’s vehicle assembly line.

The problem first came to light on September 15, when Subaru received a field report involving a front lower control arm ball joint that had separated. The automaker began a 100% inspection of castle nut fastening conditions the following day and continued investigating the incident through October 9.

The investigation determined that insufficient tightening torque allowed the ball joint to separate from the lower control arm, resulting in a loss of control while driving. Supplier records also indicated that certain affected assemblies did not have a documented inspection pass result.

The defect presents a safety risk because a ball joint that separates while a vehicle is moving can cause the driver to lose control and increase the likelihood of a crash. The failure may also occur without any preceding warning, leaving drivers with little or no opportunity to react.

Subaru Advises Affected Owners Not to Drive

Subaru decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall on October 10, 2026. Dealers were notified on October 15 and instructed to contact affected owners, advise them not to drive their vehicles, and arrange towing to a dealership for inspection.

Owners should follow the no-drive advisory rather than attempting to drive their vehicles to a dealership. Affected owners are also advised to park their SUVs outside.

Recall Repairs Will Be Completed Free of Charge

Dealers will inspect the left-hand front lower control arm ball joint assembly and replace it if necessary. All inspection and repair work will be performed at no cost to customers.

Replacement components will have castle nuts tightened to the specified fastening requirements, addressing the problem identified during the investigation.

Subaru plans to coordinate directly with affected owners, with remedy notifications scheduled for December 16, 2026. The automaker has also introduced a 100% inspection of castle nut fastening conditions at its assembly plant to address the issue during production.

The recall affects just eight 2026 Subaru Forester and Crosstrek SUVs, but the potential for suspension separation and loss of control has prompted the automaker to issue a no-drive warning and arrange free inspections and necessary repairs.
