BMW is expanding its driver assistance technology beyond highways, introducing new navigation-guided features designed to help drivers handle turns, lane changes, intersections and roundabouts in urban traffic. The upgraded system is scheduled to launch in Germany next year, with other markets expected to follow gradually.

The expansion will allow BMW’s existing Motorway and City Assistant to support partially automated driving across a broader range of environments, helping drivers transition from highways to country roads and city streets with fewer interruptions.

BMW City Assistant Expands Into Urban Traffic

The new functions use active route guidance through BMW Maps to anticipate upcoming maneuvers and provide assistance when needed. The system can help drivers navigate intersections, change lanes in city traffic and negotiate roundabouts.

BMW’s existing City Assistant can already handle stopping and pulling away at traffic lights in supported markets, including Germany. The upcoming expansion builds on those capabilities by addressing more complex urban driving situations.

The goal is to extend assistance beyond less demanding highway environments and reduce some of the workload involved in navigating busy city streets.

BMW’s New Driving Technology Is Still Level 2

Despite the expanded capabilities, BMW’s upgraded system remains an SAE Level 2 driver assistance technology, not a self-driving system. Drivers must stay attentive, monitor their surroundings and be prepared to take control whenever necessary.

The system also continuously checks whether the driver is paying attention, reinforcing the requirement for active human supervision.

A central part of the upgrade is BMW’s Symbiotic Drive technology, which allows drivers and assistance systems to work together rather than having the vehicle take over completely.

Drivers can continue accelerating, braking and steering while assistance is active. The vehicle adapts to their inputs and preferred driving style, creating a more integrated driving experience.

BMW Uses Driver Intent to Improve Assistance

BMW is also working to make its driver assistance technology more intuitive by interpreting steering behavior and gaze direction to better understand what drivers intend to do.

For example, Lane Keeping Assist can distinguish between an intentional lane change and an unintended departure from the lane. This allows the system to intervene when necessary instead of constantly opposing the driver’s steering inputs.

The new functions will also integrate with Panoramic iDrive, featured in BMW’s newest models. Information about upcoming maneuvers and the current status of assistance systems will appear in the windshield projection, keeping relevant details within the driver’s field of view.

BMW Maps will also introduce a Driver Assistance navigation view that combines route guidance, the vehicle’s surroundings and assistance-system information in a single 3D presentation on the central touchscreen.

The display is designed to help drivers understand what the vehicle detects and how the assistance systems intend to respond to changing traffic conditions.

Several BMW Models Already Have the Required Hardware

BMW says customers will not need to purchase additional hardware to access the expanded functionality. The necessary equipment is already standard on the new iX3 and iX4, as well as across the 3 Series, 7 Series and X5 lineups.

Once the software becomes available, owners will be able to activate the new assistance features through an over-the-air update. The update will also be available to customers who purchased their vehicles before the rollout begins.

BMW is using a similar approach for the Drift Moment function, which is scheduled to arrive on the M350 xDrive next year through an OTA update. The feature will enable a pure rear-wheel-drive mode in vehicles that have already been built and delivered.

Germany Gets BMW’s New City Assistant First

Germany will be the first market to receive the expanded City Assistant, although BMW has not announced an exact launch date.

Other countries will follow gradually, with availability depending on local regulations.

The expansion marks BMW’s effort to bring partially automated driving into more everyday situations, extending assistance beyond highway cruising to the challenges of urban traffic. While drivers will still need to remain fully attentive, the new functions are designed to help manage some of the more demanding aspects of city driving.
