Price remains the top priority for American car buyers, while Chinese consumers place greater emphasis on technology and features, according to a 2026 global survey of more than 12,000 car shoppers. The findings highlight how regional preferences are shaping the automotive market and influencing the vehicles automakers offer.

Price Leads U.S. Car-Buying Priorities

For American consumers, affordability is the biggest consideration when purchasing a vehicle, with 68% identifying price as their top concern. European buyers share a similar focus, with 62% prioritizing cost.

China presents a different picture. There, 58% of consumers rank technology and features as their leading consideration when choosing a car.

The differences reflect contrasting market conditions. Rising living costs in the United States and Europe have made affordability a major concern, while China’s automotive market is experiencing an intense price war that has made vehicles more affordable and created opportunities for automakers to compete through technology and equipment.

Why Chinese Cars Offer More Technology

Consumer preferences help explain why Chinese automakers increasingly emphasize technology and equipment. Vehicles from Chinese brands often feature large infotainment displays, multiple digital interfaces, advanced driver assistance systems and comfort features that may be offered as optional extras in other markets.

In China, automakers are competing aggressively to deliver more features as buyers seek technology-rich vehicles. Equipment and digital capabilities play a central role in attracting customers.

American automakers, meanwhile, must remain particularly attentive to pricing, especially in the mass-market segment. However, technology remains important to U.S. consumers, with 49% ranking features and technology among their top considerations.

Brand Loyalty Remains Stronger in the U.S.

Brand loyalty also differs significantly between American and Chinese car buyers.

Among U.S. consumers, 79% of mass-market buyers and 72% of premium buyers considered only established brands during their previous vehicle purchase.

Brand loyalty is considerably weaker in China, where 24% of respondents said they do not care about the brand at all.

Age Shapes Electric Vehicle Interest

Beyond regional preferences, age is another important factor influencing car-buying decisions, particularly when it comes to battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

Younger consumers are generally more open to purchasing electric vehicles. Around 50% of Gen Y and Gen Z buyers in the United States and China said they would consider a BEV. In Europe, the figure reached 46% among younger consumers.

Older buyers showed less interest in making the switch. Only 22% of older Americans said they were willing to purchase an electric vehicle, compared with 50% of younger consumers.

China stands out from this trend, with more than half of consumers across all age groups expressing openness to electric vehicles.

Automakers Face Different Consumer Expectations

The findings highlight the challenges facing automakers competing across global markets. Consumer expectations vary not only by country but also by age, making it difficult for manufacturers to rely on a single approach to vehicle design and equipment.

While younger Chinese buyers may place greater value on technology and features, older American consumers may focus more heavily on affordability and other purchase considerations.

For global automakers, understanding these differences is essential to developing vehicles that meet the expectations of consumers in each market.
