Ford is preparing to introduce a new affordable midsize pickup for international markets next year, expanding its global truck lineup as competition from Chinese automakers intensifies. CEO Jim Farley confirmed the upcoming model during the company’s third-quarter earnings call, revealing that its base material costs are expected to be 20% lower than those of the current Ford Ranger.

Ford Plans a New Affordable Pickup for International Markets

The upcoming pickup will be different from both the Maverick and the Fathom, giving Ford another option in the affordable truck segment. However, the model is being developed for international markets rather than the United States.

The new truck will be a midsize pickup positioned below the Ranger in terms of production costs. Ford aims to attract buyers who want a pickup but prefer a more affordable option than the brand’s established models.

The move also reflects Ford’s efforts to strengthen its position in international markets, where Chinese manufacturers are expanding their presence with competitively priced pickups.

New Ford Pickup Targets 20% Lower Material Costs

Farley confirmed that the affordable midsize pickup is scheduled to launch next year, although he did not announce an exact date or identify the first markets that will receive it.

“Alongside strengthening our best franchises, we’re opening new paths to grow at more affordable price points. Next year, we will be launching our affordable midsize pickup for international markets,” Farley said.

Ford has not disclosed the vehicle’s complete specifications or design details. However, Farley revealed that its base material costs are expected to be 20% lower than those of today’s Ranger.

“We expect the base material cost for this truck to be 20% lower than today’s Ranger. Just as Maverick has done in the US, this truck is designed to bring new customers into the Ford truck lineup internationally at a cost structure that allows us to compete, in this case, with the Chinese,” Farley added.

Reducing production costs is a central part of Ford’s strategy as Chinese automakers continue introducing affordable pickups in international markets. These vehicles increasingly combine competitive pricing with modern technology, including electrified powertrain options.

Could the New Ford Pickup Feature a Plug-In Hybrid?

Ford has not announced which engine or powertrain will be used in its upcoming midsize pickup. A plug-in hybrid configuration is one possibility, but the company has not confirmed plans to offer this technology.

Chinese manufacturers have increasingly adopted plug-in hybrid systems in their midsize trucks, combining electric driving capability with conventional engine flexibility.

Ford could explore a similar solution to make its new pickup more competitive internationally. However, its powertrain specifications remain undisclosed.

Will the New Pickup Be Significantly Cheaper?

Although Ford expects the new truck’s base material costs to be 20% lower than those of the Ranger, that does not mean its final selling price will be reduced by the same percentage.

Nevertheless, the lower production cost structure demonstrates Ford’s intention to offer a more affordable entry point into its international truck lineup and compete more effectively with Chinese manufacturers.

Ford has yet to reveal the pickup’s platform, powertrain, detailed specifications or initial launch markets. The company has confirmed that the new affordable midsize truck is scheduled to arrive internationally next year as part of its strategy to attract more customers to its global pickup lineup.
