Mercedes-Benz is developing advanced automotive display technologies designed to transform how drivers and passengers interact with their vehicles. The new research focuses on holographic projections integrated into windshields and windows, exterior micro-LED displays, and improved electric vehicle power technology.
Instead of filling dashboards with increasingly large screens, the approach aims to integrate digital information directly into vehicle glass, keeping displays invisible when they are not in use.
Mercedes-Benz Develops Holographic Windshield Technology
One of the key developments involves a transparent film laminated directly into the windshield. The specialized material reflects light from a concealed projector to create high-resolution holographic images inside the vehicle.
The projected images are directional, allowing the front passenger to watch streaming video without distracting the driver. When the system is turned off, the images disappear completely, leaving the windshield transparent.
This technology could deliver a premium multimedia experience without requiring additional conventional screens throughout the cabin.
Display in Glass Technology Adds Exterior Warnings
The visual innovations also extend to the outside of the vehicle through a technology called “Display in Glass.” The system integrates micro-LEDs directly into the rear window composite.
The exterior display can show dynamic brake lights, warning symbols and traffic alerts to drivers behind the vehicle. It is designed to provide immediate information about sudden stops while improving road safety.
The technology also incorporates these visual signals without permanently modifying the vehicle’s physical sheet metal.
New 800-Volt Power Converter Targets EV Efficiency
Mercedes-Benz is also addressing electric vehicle hardware efficiency with an innovative 800-volt Power Converter.
The programmable micro-converter manages energy flow at the individual battery cell level, helping maintain constant high-voltage output regardless of the battery’s overall state of charge.
The system is designed to maximize battery performance without requiring major increases in computing power, potentially allowing lighter and more compact electric drivetrains.
Mercedes-Benz Rethinks Traditional Dashboard Design
The glass-based display technology introduces a different approach to automotive interior design. Rather than making large digital screens the dominant feature of the cabin, the concept integrates technology into existing vehicle surfaces.
Holographic projections could display essential information directly within the driver’s line of sight, while directional glass surfaces could provide passenger entertainment without distracting the person behind the wheel.
This approach could also reduce dashboard clutter and allow greater emphasis on the vehicle’s interior design.
How Smart Glass Could Change Future Cars
If the holographic windshields and micro-LED windows successfully reach mass production, they could fundamentally change traditional dashboard layouts.
By moving vehicle information and entertainment into glass surfaces, Mercedes-Benz is exploring an alternative to conventional screens while combining new display technologies with advancements in electric vehicle power systems.
