The 2027 BMW X5 enters its fifth generation with updated Neue Klasse styling, a redesigned interior, and the broadest range of powertrains ever offered on the model. For the first time, the lineup includes the all-electric BMW iX5, which BMW estimates can travel up to 435 miles on a full charge.
Fifth-Generation BMW X5 Introduces Neue Klasse Design
BMW has redesigned the X5 with its Neue Klasse design language while keeping the SUV roughly the same overall size as its predecessor. The wheelbase has been stretched by 2.4 inches, which BMW says improves rear-seat legroom, and the vehicle is taller with revised proportions that create a broader, more muscular stance.
The exterior adopts narrow, vertically oriented kidney grilles, smoother side surfacing, and thin taillights that nearly meet at the center of the liftgate. Instead of conventional door handles, the X5 uses touch-capacitive winglets integrated into the B- and C-pillars. Soft-close doors come standard, while electrically powered doors are available as an option.
BMW also introduces new double-X-shaped lighting signatures beneath the leading edge of the hood. The integrated headlight unit combines the low beams, daytime running lights, side lights, and turn signals into a single assembly, and drivers can disable one of the internal lighting elements if they prefer a different appearance.
Cabin Receives a Comprehensive Redesign
The interior has been extensively updated with a new dual-spoke steering wheel featuring an ovular rim, thumb cutouts, and floating touch-sensitive controls.
Behind the steering wheel, BMW replaces the traditional digital instrument cluster with the BMW Panoramic iDrive display, which projects key vehicle information onto a strip of darkened glass spanning from A-pillar to A-pillar. The system also includes an AI-powered digital assistant.
A 17.9-inch trapezoidal infotainment display sits at the center of the dashboard, while a 14.6-inch passenger display is available as an option. Ambient lighting is integrated beneath the infotainment screen and into the doors, and the center console features a slate panel housing controls for the parking brake, rear-window defrost, and hazard lights.
BMW iX5 Brings an All-Electric X5 for the First Time
The new BMW iX5 60 xDrive marks the first fully electric version of the X5. It uses one electric motor on each axle, producing a combined 570 horsepower and 593 pound-feet of torque.
BMW estimates the iX5 60 xDrive will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The SUV is built on an 800-volt electrical architecture and features BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive battery and drive-motor technology developed specifically for Neue Klasse vehicles.
The iX5 is equipped with a 144-kWh battery pack using cylindrical cells that BMW says offer 20% greater energy density than its previous fifth-generation prismatic cells. According to the automaker, the SUV supports charging speeds of up to 460 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 22 minutes using a compatible DC fast charger.
BMW estimates the iX5 60 xDrive will deliver up to 435 miles of driving range based on the company’s own testing.
Five Powertrain Options Across the Lineup
The fifth-generation BMW X5 will be offered with five propulsion types, making it the broadest powertrain lineup BMW has introduced for a single model.
The turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine continues in the rear-wheel-drive X5 40 and all-wheel-drive X5 40 xDrive. A redesigned turbocharger increases output to 394 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque, which BMW says is enough for a 0-to-60 mph time of 5.1 seconds.
BMW also confirmed that a V-8-powered high-performance variant is under development.
The 2027 BMW X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid combines the revised inline-six engine with a 194-horsepower electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission. Total system output is rated at 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.
A 27-kWh battery provides a BMW-estimated electric-only driving range of 44 miles. BMW says the plug-in hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
In addition to gasoline, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric models, the X5 will also be available with diesel and hydrogen powertrains in other global markets. BMW stated that the hydrogen model is based on a third-generation fuel-cell system jointly developed with Toyota since 2014, with BMW manufacturing components at its plants in Munich and Steyr, Germany.
Pricing and Release Timeline
The 2027 BMW X5 40 starts at $71,250, while the all-wheel-drive X5 40 xDrive begins at $73,550. The X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid is priced from $78,950, and the all-electric iX5 60 xDrive starts at $81,250.
The gas-powered X5 40 xDrive will arrive at dealerships in October. The rear-wheel-drive X5 40, X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid, and BMW iX5 60 xDrive are scheduled to reach dealers during the first quarter of 2027.
The fifth-generation BMW X5 expands the model’s lineup with new styling, a redesigned interior, and multiple propulsion options, including the first all-electric iX5, as the SUV begins rolling out later this year and into early 2027.
