Volkswagen is recalling 57,851 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs in the United States after a software-related issue could cause the rearview camera image to disappear from the display screen. The recall affects certain 2024-2026 models, with the automaker planning a free software update to address the problem.
Which Volkswagen Models Are Included?
According to the recall report posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the following vehicles are affected:
- 2024-2026 Volkswagen Atlas: 38,646 vehicles
- 2024-2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport: 19,205 vehicles
The recall covers a total of 57,851 SUVs. Owners may experience a blank rearview camera image on the vehicle’s display screen, reducing rear visibility and increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
The NHTSA report states: “Under certain circumstances, a vehicle may experience a low-voltage electrical event that can cause camera images, including the rearview camera image, to not appear on the display screen as intended.”
Volkswagen said environmental conditions may contribute to the issue but added that it is not aware of a known systematic problem that creates the specific conditions leading to the camera failure.
The automaker is aware of 571 claims that could be related to the recall.
What Owners Should Do
Volkswagen will begin mailing owner notification letters on September 18, 2026. The company advises owners experiencing the issue to use caution when reversing their vehicles until the repair is completed.
The remedy consists of a software update for the camera system, which will be performed free of charge.
As of July 28, 2026, owners can check whether their vehicle is included by entering their vehicle identification number (VIN) on the NHTSA website. They can also contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall number 91TV.
2027 Volkswagen Atlas Excluded From the Recall
The updated 2027 Volkswagen Atlas is not included in the recall. Volkswagen said the affected vehicles with the camera issue were produced only through December 16, 2025.
Revealed in late March, the 2027 Atlas features updated exterior styling, a revised interior with new materials, and a turbocharged engine producing 282 horsepower. Earlier this month, Volkswagen announced pricing for the model, which starts at $41,610, while models equipped with all-wheel drive begin at $43,610, more than $4,000 higher than the comparable 2026 version.
Volkswagen has added more standard equipment to the 2027 Atlas, including a power liftgate, wireless charging for two phones, front and rear parking sensors, and heated and ventilated front seats. The model competes with the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade.
The recall applies only to specified 2024-2026 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models, while the redesigned 2027 Atlas remains unaffected.
