Ford and Geely are moving forward with a new European partnership that will use Geely’s Global Intelligent Electric Architecture (GEA) platform as the foundation for a new Ford SUV, adding another layer to the automakers’ joint effort at Ford’s Valencia, Spain, plant.
Ford and Geely Form European Joint Venture
Ford and Geely officially entered into a partnership in July 2026 to establish a joint venture focused on producing low-emissions vehicles at Ford’s Valencia plant for the European market.
Ford holds a 66% majority stake in the joint venture, while Geely owns the remaining 34% through its Centurion Industries subsidiary.
According to Automotive News, new details about the partnership show that Geely’s GEA platform will underpin a new Ford SUV planned for release and sales in Europe.
Geely GEA Platform to Underpin Ford SUV
Geely’s Global Intelligent Electric Architecture is designed to support both electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The approach allows automakers to use the same platform for multiple types of drivetrains rather than relying on separate architectures that can complicate production and increase costs.
The use of the GEA platform by Ford was confirmed by An Conghui, the new chairman of Geely Auto Group, during a company earnings call held a few days ago.
An also confirmed that Geely will use Ford’s Valencia plant to produce Geely models, helping expand the company’s portfolio in the region.
Ford to Bring Its Own Design and Driving Character
Despite using Geely’s GEA platform, Ford is emphasizing that the new multi-energy SUV will retain elements associated with the Ford brand.
Ford says the SUV will feature a rally-bred design and driving dynamics intended to evoke the company’s racing heritage.
The partnership also adds to Geely’s broader collaboration strategy. The company already has an agreement with the Renault group involving the GEA platform in some models for the South American market.
The Ford-Geely joint venture will produce low-emissions vehicles at the Valencia plant, with the new Ford SUV set to use Geely’s GEA architecture while retaining Ford-focused design and driving characteristics.
