Fiat has struggled to gain traction in the U.S. in recent years, but its tiny Topolino quadricycle is generating attention ahead of its formal launch in October. The model is already drawing interest from buyers in golf-cart communities, offering Fiat a potential path to surpass the 2,000-unit annual sales mark it has been unable to reach in recent years.

Fiat’s U.S. Sales Have Fallen Sharply

The Italian automaker’s U.S. sales were already declining before the 2020s, and the pandemic and global supply chain chip shortage added to its challenges. The discontinuation of the 500L and 500X further reduced Fiat’s lineup, while the 500 hatchback had been removed from the U.S. market years earlier.

Fiat sold just 919 vehicles in 2022, followed by 602 units in 2023. Sales recovered somewhat in 2024 after the launch of the 500e, but declined again last year.

Fiat is still trying to maintain a presence in the U.S., but it needs a model capable of generating enough sales to help the brand break the 2,000-unit threshold again. That does not necessarily require a major volume seller, but it does require a product capable of creating renewed interest.

Topolino Targets the Golf Cart Market

The Topolino could provide that opportunity. Although its formal U.S. launch is scheduled for October, the small vehicle is already generating significant attention.

The Topolino is classified as a quadricycle rather than a conventional car. In Europe, it can be driven around cities and town centers without a driver’s license, with the minimum requirement being a moped license or safety certificate and a minimum age of 14 to 16, depending on the country.

In the U.S., Fiat sees potential among affluent, self-contained communities where residents commonly use golf carts for transportation. A basic new golf cart costs about $5,000, while custom and premium models can exceed $20,000. At about $15,000, the Topolino sits between those price points.

Early Interest Builds Before Official Launch

Interest in the Topolino increased after Fiat posted a reel showing the quadricycles arriving in the U.S. The video generated numerous inquiries from customers who wanted to purchase one as soon as possible.

One of the first owners interviewed by Automotive News said the small EV has attracted considerable attention from neighbors and others in the community. “I have already had people literally wave me down,” the owner said.

According to Fiat CEO Olivier François, the first batch consisted of 300 units after U.S. dealers persuaded the company to bring the vehicles to the country early.

Dealers Report Immediate Sales

Automotive News reported that six Topolinos were sold immediately at Alfa Romeo Fiat of Daytona. Schmelz Countryside Alfa Romeo and Fiat in Minnesota sold its allocation of five units before the vehicles even reached the dealership lot.

In Michigan, Golling Alfa Romeo Fiat had to order nine additional Topolinos after selling 10 of its first 14 allocated vehicles in a short period.

Those sales represent only a portion of the purchases made before the official launch. Based on the early demand, the initial 300-unit batch may be close to selling out, if it has not already done so.

Fiat Faces Its Next Challenge

The challenge for Fiat now is maintaining the Topolino’s pre-launch momentum while meeting potential demand and avoiding missed sales opportunities.

While Fiat’s U.S. passenger-car lineup of one model is not generating much revenue, the unexpected response to the Topolino could help the automaker remain in the American market longer through its emerging position in the quadricycle and golf-cart market.
