The MG 07 has officially launched in China with a starting price of 108,900 yuan, or about $16,200 at current exchange rates, offering buyers a midsize sedan whose design bears a noticeable resemblance to the Porsche Taycan.
MG 07 Offers a More Affordable Alternative
Chinese automakers using styling cues similar to familiar models such as the Land Rover Defender is nothing new. While the reasons behind that approach can be difficult to determine, familiar design elements can attract attention from fans of established models as well as buyers seeking a more attainable alternative.
The MG 07 is one example. Its resemblance to the Porsche Taycan, a luxury electric vehicle that starts at $111,900, is difficult to overlook. That does not mean MG copied Porsche, but for buyers who place a strong emphasis on design, the MG 07 offers a substantially lower-priced option.
MG 07 Specs Include Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Power
According to CarNewsChina, the MG 07 is available with an all-electric powertrain producing up to 235 kW, or 315 horsepower, and 350 Nm, or 258 lb-ft, of torque. A 91-kWh battery is also available, providing a claimed range of up to 845 km, or 525 miles.
MG also offers a plug-in hybrid version for buyers who want the option of refueling at a gas station. The PHEV combines a 1.5-liter engine producing 82 kW, or 110 horsepower, with an electric motor delivering 152 kW, or 204 horsepower.
Under China’s CLTC standards, the plug-in hybrid has an electric-only range of 245 km, or 152 miles, and a combined range of 1,745 km, or 1,084 miles.
MG 07 Interior Adds Premium Features
While the MG 07’s overall shape and rear styling recall the Porsche Taycan, its front fascia is more reminiscent of the Toyota Camry.
Inside, the sedan features a 15.6-inch floating infotainment screen, along with a driver’s seat offering power adjustment, heating and ventilation. It also includes a “Queen” zero-gravity passenger seat and a 21-speaker audio system.
Those features, combined with the MG 07’s low starting price, illustrate the appeal of Chinese cars for budget-conscious buyers who are less concerned about badge prestige.
MG 07 Deliveries Begin in China
MG will begin delivering versions of the MG 07 with 650 km, or 404 miles, of range in China at the end of August. The 845-km, or 525-mile, versions are scheduled to follow in October.
Competition in China remains fierce, with weakening domestic demand prompting automakers to expand more aggressively into export markets. In an increasingly crowded market, efforts to stand out, including the use of familiar design cues, could help brands attract attention.
The MG 07 enters that competitive environment with a low starting price, multiple powertrain options and design elements that may be familiar to buyers of established models.
