The next-generation Defender, expected to offer an all-electric powertrain, could be delayed into the 2030s as Jaguar Land Rover navigates financial challenges and changing market conditions, according to a report from The Times.

Defender EV Reportedly Delayed

The reported delay would leave the all-electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class without a direct rival in the traditional, heritage-focused luxury off-roader segment. The Rivian R1S and GMC Hummer EV SUV offer similar capabilities, but JLR is not abandoning its electric vehicle plans.

Instead, the company has delayed several targets as it adjusts to changing market conditions. JLR will focus first on delivering the all-electric Range Rover, with the baby Defender EV possibly following shortly afterward.

JLR Could Use the Extra Time to Gauge Demand

The later arrival of the Defender EV could give JLR more time to assess demand for electric luxury off-roaders. Launching the Range Rover Electric and the smaller Defender, possibly called the Defender Sport, could provide an opportunity to gauge how buyers respond.

JLR could also monitor the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology to learn more about what customers want from an electric luxury off-roader.

Multiple Powertrains Could Remain an Option

Continued U.S. demand for combustion-powered vehicles could make a multi-powertrain strategy an option for JLR. The company has said its MLA platform, used by the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, will remain flexible enough to accommodate different powertrains.

JLR’s newer EMA platform will also now support a full-hybrid setup. That raises the possibility that the Defender Sport could offer a combustion-assisted powertrain alongside an EV, despite earlier reports that it would be electric-only.

Range Rover EV Launches Remain on Track

For now, the Range Rover Electric and Range Rover Sport Electric are slated to launch later this year. JLR has also unveiled an EMA-based EV called the Range Rover GT, which is positioned as a grand tourer designed for long-distance travel.

If the all-electric Defender arrives in the next decade, as the report suggests, it will represent a new chapter for the model. The Defender’s lineage stretches back to the original Land Rover Series, followed by the coil-sprung Land Rover One Ten in 1983, before the Defender name was adopted in 1990.
