The upcoming Range Rover GT will be Land Rover’s most car-like model yet, combining an all-electric powertrain with a road-focused design while retaining the brand’s off-road capabilities. As the fifth “Rover” in the family, the new EV marks a sharp departure from the mild-hybrid and internal-combustion powertrains Land Rover is known for.
A More Car-Like Range Rover
The new Range Rover GT features a silhouette similar to the Tesla Model Y and is expected to be the most road-oriented Land Rover in the lineup when it arrives. At the same time, the company is positioning it as potentially the most off-road-ready GT in the world.
Land Rover has now released a teaser showing the pre-production Range Rover GT tackling off-road conditions. While the brand acknowledges that the model has its most car-like silhouette yet, it also makes clear that the GT can still do “Land Rover things.”
Electric Power Meets Off-Road Capability
The teaser shows the Range Rover GT kicking up sand and throwing snow, highlighting its ability to handle terrain despite its more road-focused shape.
It also indicates that Land Rover has translated its off-road experience and technology into an all-electric platform. The new model is expected to retain capabilities associated with the brand’s terrain-focused vehicles, including Sand, Snow and other all-terrain modes, although the available modes have not yet been confirmed.
The capabilities of the new EMA platform and the Range Rover GT’s powertrain remain under wraps. Land Rover has also hinted that a hybrid version of the Range Rover will follow the fully electric model.
Could Its Design Limit Off-Roading?
One potential concern is the GT’s relatively low-looking design. Based on other teaser images, the model could sit lower than what hardcore off-road driving typically demands.
However, the teaser also shows a noticeable wheel gap, while Land Rover’s use of air suspension could play a role in the vehicle’s overall ground clearance. A final judgment will have to wait until the Range Rover GT is fully revealed.
The model could ultimately be viewed as a soft-roader, although its off-road capabilities may make it one of the more capable vehicles in that category.
A GT-Focused Range Rover
Despite retaining some Land Rover DNA, the Range Rover GT appears designed to emphasize the “GT” part of its name. Its plush interior, large wheels, low-profile sidewalls and overall stance give it a distinctly road-oriented character.
The design suggests that the all-electric model is intended to be a long-distance cruiser while still maintaining some of the off-road character expected from a Land Rover.
Can the Range Rover GT Do It All?
The central question surrounding the upcoming Range Rover GT is whether it is attempting to combine too many roles into one vehicle. Its mix of road-focused styling, GT characteristics, electric power and off-road capability could make it difficult to master every area.
For now, the final verdict remains out until Land Rover reveals the Range Rover GT in full, without its camouflage and teaser restrictions.
