The Ford Mustang Baja could become an unexpected addition to Ford’s growing lineup of enthusiast-focused off-road vehicles. Automotive News reporter Mike Martinez says Ford has shown dealers an off-road Mustang called Baja, suggesting the unusual variant remains under consideration.

Ford Is Expanding Its Off-Road Business

Just one month ago, Ford highlighted the growing importance of enthusiast off-roaders while discussing its second-quarter financial results. CEO Jim Farley said 25% of Ford’s second-quarter sales were tied to off-road vehicles or trim levels.

Farley specifically pointed to Raptor and Tremor versions of the Bronco and F-150, saying they are attracting customers who are younger, more affluent and more geographically diverse.

“And we are investing to grow our leadership in this space,” Farley said during a call with analysts. “Stay tuned.”

Could Mustang Become Ford’s Next Off-Road Model?

Ford has several “passion products” with highly loyal followings, including the Mustang, Bronco, F-150 and compact Maverick pickup. If a particular variant generates strong returns, expanding that formula can offer a way to reach a different audience with an existing model.

The Mustang already has a long history of high-horsepower special editions designed for both track and road use. Ford also wants to explore other directions for the Mustang, including potentially controversial ideas such as a four-door body style or a fuel-saving hybrid powertrain.

An off-road version would represent another major departure. Martinez discussed the possibility during a video roundtable about Ford’s future product plans last week.

“They’ve shown dealers an off-road Mustang called Baja,” Martinez said. “As far as we know, that’s still in the works at some point.”

What Is Known About the Mustang Baja?

This is not the first time an off-road Mustang has been discussed. The idea has circulated for several years, alongside rumors about a Mustang sedan.

The possibility is separate from the electric Mach-E Rally, which many internal-combustion Mustang enthusiasts do not consider an actual Mustang. German engineers at Loder1899 also developed their own version of an off-road Mustang Raptor, inspired by Pierce Brosnan’s modified Mustang in The Thomas Crown Affair.

In May 2026, Ford Europe further fueled speculation with a teaser showing various rally-focused models in development. The latest Automotive News report, however, specifically identifies the Mustang and gives the proposed model a name: Baja.

Dealers reportedly saw the vehicle behind closed doors not long ago.

A V8-Powered Off-Road Mustang?

Unlike the Mach-E, the reported Mustang Baja would be combustion-powered and would almost certainly use the Coyote V8. In Dark Horse trim, that engine is capable of producing 500 horsepower.

Without a heavy battery pack, the reported Baja could offer a different performance formula from the Mach-E Rally. Ford’s experience developing Raptor models could also potentially contribute to the Mustang’s off-road capability.

An off-road Mustang would be an unusual interpretation of the pony car’s identity, but the concept could combine the Mustang’s performance character with a more rugged setup.

What an Off-Road Mustang Would Need

An off-road Baja variant would need to meet several requirements. It would have to be fast and stylish while also being lifted and likely heavier than a conventional Mustang.

It would also likely require additional underbody protection and enough maneuverability for off-road use. That could favor a two-door body style, although a sedan would not be out of the question.

When Could the Mustang Baja Arrive?

Ford cannot always rely on entirely new nameplates to succeed or create new revenue streams. An off-road Mustang Baja would instead use an established model to appeal to a somewhat different audience.

For now, the Mustang Baja remains a reported future product rather than a confirmed production model. If it does move forward, it probably would not arrive until the mid-cycle refresh expected around 2028.
