Ford has issued a recall affecting nearly 150,000 Mustang vehicles after identifying a potential wiring harness ground connection failure that could cause several vehicle problems, including a loss of drive power. The latest action brings the total number of recalls involving the first 2024 models of the current S650 Mustang generation to 12.
Ford Mustang Recall in Detail
The Ford Mustang recall covers 148,663 vehicles from the 2024 through 2026 model years. The key issue involves a potential failure of wiring harness ground connections in the engine compartment.
- Model years affected: 2024-2026
- Total units affected: 148,663
- Key cause: Wiring harness ground connection failure
- Potential symptoms: Loss of motive power, inoperable headlights, inoperable windshield washer system, loss of air conditioning, and loss of engine cooling fan function
The detailed recall report was published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Ford said the issue was identified after a durability test found two broken eyelets on a 2027 Ford Mustang, prompting an analysis that ultimately led to the recall.
“In affected vehicles, the engine compartment wiring harness ground eyelet terminals may experience fatigue fracture,” the recall report states. “Depending on which ground eyelet fractures, this condition may result in a loss of motive power, loss of right and/or left headlamps, loss of windshield washer fluid pump function, loss of air conditioning, and/or an inoperable engine cooling fan.”
The latest recall is also the second recent action affecting the Mustang’s wiper-related systems. Last month, more than 67,000 examples of the muscle car were recalled because of defective wiper motors.
Ford Reports Eight Warranty Claims
A review of global field data identified eight warranty claims related to the wiring harness issue. Four of those claims involved vehicles that had been on the road for less than three months.
Ford said it was not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the condition.
What Mustang Owners Must Do
The engine compartment wiring harness ground terminals will be replaced free of charge, but owners must take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for the repair.
Interim letters informing owners about the safety risk were due to be mailed on August 31, 2026. The remedy, however, will not be available until March 2027, meaning owners will need to monitor their Mustangs for the listed symptoms until then.
Ford customer service can be reached at 1-866-436-7332 for additional information. As of August 28, 2026, owners can also use their vehicle identification numbers on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website to determine whether their vehicle is affected by the recall.
Ford Leads U.S. Automakers in 2026 Recalls
Ford has now issued 67 U.S. recalls in 2026, placing it well ahead of other automakers. Stellantis is next with 30 recalls, followed by General Motors with 22 and Toyota with 21.
Ford has defended its high number of recalls, saying they are part of the manufacturer’s proactive safety strategy, with many issues identified internally before customers are affected.
