Ford is recalling 148,663 seventh-generation Mustangs from the 2024 through 2026 model years over a wiring problem in the engine compartment that could cause multiple vehicle components to stop working, including the engine.

Wiring Problem Can Break Ground Connections

According to recall documents filed with the NHTSA, the issue began when Ford added heat shrink wrap to certain sections of the Mustang’s engine-compartment wiring harness during production of the 2024 model. The company did not identify why the change was made.

On some vehicles, the heat shrink can interfere with the eyelet terminals used to connect ground wires to the car’s chassis. That interference can bend the connection and reduce its flexibility against vibrations.

Over time, one or more ground-wire eyelets can break, opening the circuit. Ford said the resulting symptoms depend on which ground wire fails.

Potential problems include a washer fluid pump that stops working and a loss of air conditioning. A failure could also cause the headlights or other lights to stop working, while the engine fan could quit operating or the engine itself could shut down entirely.

Ford Identified the Problem During Testing

The issue came to light last June when members of Ford’s Electrical Distribution Systems team discovered two broken eyelets on a 2027 Mustang being used for durability testing. The failures resulted in a loss of engine power.

The team determined that the wiring problem existed before the 2027 model year vehicles.

Ford told the NHTSA that it identified eight warranty claims related to the issue between October 2024 and August 2026. Four of those claims involved vehicles that had been in service for less than three months.

Ford said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with the problem.

How Ford Will Fix the Mustang Recall

Ford dealers will repair the affected vehicles by replacing the existing eyelets with a new pigtail featuring redesigned terminal geometry. The change is intended to eliminate interference and unwanted bending stress.

Letters notifying owners of the recall are already being mailed. However, the repair will not be available until the end of March 2027.

Ford will send additional letters when the repair becomes available, allowing owners to schedule an appointment with a dealer.

Which Ford Mustangs Are Affected?

The recall appears to cover every seventh-generation Ford Mustang built before June 9, 2026. CarBuzz has reached out to Ford for confirmation, while the reported vehicle count aligns with Mustang sales numbers.

Of the 148,663 vehicles included in the recall, Ford estimates that only 1% are likely to experience a premature wiring failure.

Ford’s Broader Recall Concerns

CarBuzz has previously reported extensively on Ford’s recall problems over the last decade. CEO Jim Farley has repeatedly said that fixes are in place and that the company’s record will improve because many of the problems involved vehicles designed before his tenure.

However, the publication noted that multiple large recalls involving vehicles engineered during Farley’s tenure raise questions about that expectation.

The recall information will be updated if new details become available from Ford.
