Tesla has officially unveiled its production Cybercab, bringing the steering-wheel-free robotaxi from concept to reality in Austin, Texas. Built from the ground up for autonomous driving, the two-seat Cybercab is now joining Tesla’s expanding Robotaxi fleet and has no steering wheel or pedals.

Tesla’s Cybercab Enters the Robotaxi Fleet

The Cybercab marks a major step in Tesla’s push toward fully autonomous vehicles. Unlike the Model Y Robotaxis already operating in some cities, the Cybercab was designed specifically for self-driving operation rather than adapted from an existing vehicle.

Tesla plans to gradually add Cybercabs to its Robotaxi network, which is already providing rides in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando and Tampa.

The company says the Cybercab is designed for everyday trips, including commuting, running errands and traveling across town, with its Full Self-Driving software handling the driving.

Inside the Steering-Wheel-Free Cybercab

The Cybercab features a two-person bench seat and a large center touchscreen that serves as the primary interface for passengers. It also has upward-opening doors, a rear trunk and no front trunk.

Traditional driving controls are absent. Passengers use the touchscreen to start a trip, adjust their seats, control the air conditioning, open the doors and access entertainment.

The cabin still includes USB-C ports, power windows and individual climate vents.

How Tesla Robotaxi Rides Work

Passengers interested in trying the Cybercab first need Tesla’s Robotaxi app. The process works like other ride-hailing services: users enter a destination, review the fare and wait time, and confirm the ride.

When a Cybercab arrives, its color-changing front light bars flash during pickup, while the rear light bar glows. Tesla also instructs passengers to verify the vehicle’s license plate through the app before entering.

The Cybercab can automatically open the nearest door when it detects the ride requester’s phone. If the door does not open automatically, passengers can press an exterior button to open the scissor-style door manually.

Safety Features Keep the Ride Locked Down

Before a trip begins, all passengers must buckle their seat belts, the doors must be closed and the trunk must be shut. Once those conditions are met, passengers can tap Start Ride on the touchscreen.

During the journey, the display provides the route, arrival time, media apps and climate controls. Passengers who need to end the trip early can request a safe pull-over through the touchscreen or the app.

A large red STOP button located between the cabin lights is available for emergencies.

Tesla also says the Cybercab has a cabin camera that can be used to check who is inside and assist during emergencies. Privacy indicators appear on the touchscreen whenever the camera or microphone is active.

Tesla Opens the Door to Third-Party Cybercab Fleets

Tesla is also signaling interest in operating Cybercab fleets beyond its own Robotaxi service. Alongside the launch, the company introduced an interest form for businesses and organizations interested in fleet purchases, mobility hubs or event partnerships.

The move aligns with Elon Musk’s broader plan to eventually allow people to own Cybercabs outside Tesla’s own fleet. Musk has also floated the possibility of selling the vehicles for less than $30,000, although Tesla has not explained how private owners would receive approval to operate them without a driver.

For now, the Cybercab remains part of Tesla’s own Robotaxi service as the company rolls it out city by city. People in supported markets can use the Robotaxi app, while businesses and organizations interested in operating fleets can submit their details through Tesla’s interest form.
