RivianOS 2 is coming to first-generation Rivian R1 models as part of software update 2026.31, bringing newer interface features, controls, route alerts and AI capabilities to eligible older vehicles. Rivian says the update will allow Gen 1 and Gen 2 owners to benefit from shared software improvements while maintaining hardware-specific features.
RivianOS 2 Comes to Gen 1 R1 Vehicles
Rivian’s R1 and R2 models have entered a new generation with a software experience designed from the ground up. RivianOS 2 is an AI-defined platform that comes with the Gen 2 R1s and R2s, but the company is now extending the operating system to its first-generation customers as well.
Rivian has announced that Gen 1 Rivian R1 vehicles will receive RivianOS 2, giving early adopters access to the newer software experience and its upcoming features.
New UI and Dynamic Controls
RivianOS 2 will provide improvements across Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles, including continuous feature updates, shared UI enhancements and “new capabilities tailored to each vehicle’s hardware setup.”
The update introduces a “re-imagined UI and Dynamic Controls,” designed to provide more intuitive controls along with a customizable and context-aware interface.
R1 and R2 owners will also receive Unreal 5. However, older Gen 1 R1 vehicles will retain the previous-generation Unreal Engine 4 to keep the system responsive because it is based on older hardware.
Real-Time Route Alerts and Connected Features
RivianOS 2 also adds new “Real-Time Route Alerts” that connect with Google Maps and Waze. The feature includes incident reporting based on local authorities, as well as information about police and speed camera presence.
Rivian Connect+ subscribers will receive an updated weather app with a richer stream of data. The Mobile Live Trips feature will also receive an update as part of the software rollout.
Rivian Expands Its Unified Intelligence Platform
At the center of the update is Rivian’s Unified Intelligence push, which will give all Rivian models access to “a common AI foundation that connects select vehicle, mobile, and service experiences.”
For R2 and Gen 2 R1 models, that includes Hybrid Edge Compute and Local AI processing. Gen 1 and Gen 2 R1 models will receive Core Smart Features with “expanded cloud-assisted voice capabilities and refreshed driver display hierarchies.”
How to Get Rivian Software Update 2026.31
Rivian software update 2026.31 will be delivered over the air (OTA). Eligible R1 and R2 vehicles will receive an automatic notification when the update is available.
For Rivian vehicles without OTA enabled, owners can check with their dealer or use the Rivian App to determine whether they can get the new update themselves.
