A rare Rolls-Royce Boat Tail has appeared in Malaysia with the Crown Prince and Regent of Johor, offering a glimpse of one of the world’s most exclusive luxury cars. The appearance came as he arrived at the Johor Super Crown Polo Tournament 2026 final in the coachbuilt grand tourer.
Only Three Rolls-Royce Boat Tails Were Built
Rolls-Royce built just three Boat Tails, with reported prices of around $28 million each. That puts the model among the most expensive new cars of all time, alongside the brand’s La Rose Noire Droptail and the Bugatti La Voiture Noire.
The identities of the Boat Tail owners have long been the subject of speculation. Jay-Z and Beyoncé were rumored to have commissioned one, while Argentinian footballer Mauro Emanuel Icardi was also rumored to be an owner.
Now, according to a post from Insane Luxury on Instagram, one of the cars has appeared in Malaysia with the Crown Prince and Regent of Johor.
The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail’s Bespoke Design
Unveiled in 2021, the Boat Tail represents what Rolls-Royce calls the “pinnacle of bespoke.” Its design draws inspiration from yachts and historic boat-tail coachwork, giving the ultra-luxurious grand tourer a distinctive character.
Rather than being simply a more refined Phantom, the Boat Tail uses a reconfigured aluminum spaceframe. Each of the three cars was highly personalized for its commissioning client.
Power comes from a 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 that is widely reported to produce 563 horsepower, the same output as the contemporary Phantom.
A Rare Appearance at a Major Polo Final
While the Boat Tail’s power figure may not sound especially high by modern hypercar standards, its exclusivity, bespoke construction and reported price make it a notable automotive sight.
The Crown Prince made his arrival at the polo final in the grand tourer with a convoy in tow.
Beyond the Boat Tail, the Crown Prince has also been associated with a number of expensive hypercars, including a Bugatti W16 Mistral, Koenigsegg Jesko Attack and Ferrari LaFerrari, the latter notably finished in purple. There is no verified, complete public inventory of his collection.
Rolls-Royce Continues Its Coachbuilt Cars
The Instagram post may not contain many details, but the appearance provides a rare look at the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail, a car produced in extremely limited numbers.
Rolls-Royce continues to develop coachbuilt vehicles, with the concept now extending to all-electric propulsion. One of its latest creations is Project Nightingale, an open-top EV limited to 100 customer cars, each reportedly starting at around $9.5 million.
