The Tesla Model Y L has officially delivered more range than Tesla originally estimated, with EPA figures giving the new six-seat crossover a notable advantage over the smaller Model Y.
EPA Range Exceeds Tesla’s Original Estimates
The Model Y L Premium All-Wheel Drive is now listed on Tesla’s customer-facing website with an EPA-rated range of 332 miles when equipped with standard 19-inch wheels.
That figure is 7 miles higher than Tesla’s original 325-mile estimate. The 20-inch wheel option is also rated above Tesla’s initial projection, reaching 328 miles compared with the company’s original 320-mile estimate.
Model Y L Takes the Range Lead
The EPA figures put the Model Y L ahead of the regular Model Y in both wheel configurations.
- Model Y Premium AWD, 19-inch: 327 miles
- Model Y L Premium AWD, 19-inch: 332 miles
- Model Y Premium AWD, 20-inch: 303 miles
- Model Y L Premium AWD, 20-inch: 328 miles
That makes the larger, heavier, three-row Model Y L the longest-range Model Y available to buy in the U.S., at least according to the EPA figures.
The difference between the two wheel sizes is also relatively small on the Model Y L. Moving from 19-inch to 20-inch wheels reduces its EPA range by just 4 miles, while the same change has a much larger effect on the regular Model Y.
Model Y L Efficiency Gains
The Model Y L’s higher range comes despite its longer and heavier design and the addition of a third row. According to Tesla, aerodynamics play an important role in achieving the efficiency figures.
Tesla redesigned the rear spoiler so that it forms part of the body rather than being attached separately. The company says that change adds about 15 miles of range.
The redesigned spoiler also allowed Tesla’s engineers to move the rear brake light into the spoiler, creating more headroom for passengers in the third row.
More Efficiency Features
The stretched crossover also includes several other efficiency-focused changes. Among them is Tesla’s first-ever three-zone climate control system, designed to help keep cabin energy use in check.
Combined with the revised body shape, those changes are intended to offset the additional size and weight of the Model Y L.
Deliveries Begin This Month
First customer deliveries of the Model Y L are scheduled to begin this month. Demo units are already appearing in Tesla showrooms across the U.S. for test drives and walkarounds.
The EPA’s official figures give the Model Y L a higher range than Tesla originally estimated, with the 19-inch version rated at 332 miles and the 20-inch version at 328 miles.
