Some car brands are far more likely than others to produce vehicles that reach extremely high mileage. A study of more than 395 million vehicles in the U.S. found that Toyota led all brands with a 19.7% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, while several European luxury brands ranked near the bottom.

Toyota Leads the 250,000-Mile Rankings

Online car marketplace iSeeCars.com examined odometer readings from more than 395 million cars in the U.S., along with their model years. Heavy-duty vehicles and vehicles with limited data were excluded from the study.

Based on that information, iSeeCars calculated the average likelihood of vehicles across all brands reaching 250,000 miles. The overall average was a 5.4% chance of reaching that mileage milestone.

Only five brands performed better than the overall average, led by Toyota with a 19.7% chance of reaching 250,000 miles. Toyota’s luxury brand, Lexus, ranked second at 14.4%.

Honda and Acura followed, with chances of 13.3% and 9.5%, respectively.

GMC was the final brand to exceed the overall average, recording a 5.8% chance. It was also the only American brand to beat the 5.4% average.

Chevrolet, despite selling nearly identical trucks as GMC, ranked 11th overall with just a 3.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles.

Other Brands Near the Top

The remaining brands in iSeeCars’ top 10 all fell below the overall 5.4% average, although some came close.

Mazda ranked sixth at 5.3%, nearly matching the overall average. Lincoln followed at 4.7%, while Ram, Ford and Cadillac occupied the final three positions in the top 10.

European Luxury Brands Dominate the Bottom

European luxury brands made up much of the bottom 10 in the 250,000-mile rankings. Maserati, Mini and Jaguar tied for the lowest position, each recording a 0% chance of reaching the mileage milestone.

Fiat, Porsche, Land Rover, Audi and BMW also appeared among the bottom 10. BMW recorded the highest likelihood among those brands at 0.5%.

Mercedes-Benz and Volvo had the strongest results among the European brands, with each recording a 2.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles.

Subaru’s Ranking Was a Surprise

One of the more notable results among the below-average brands was Subaru. Despite the brand’s reputation for reliability and long life, it ranked as the second-lowest Japanese brand on the list, with a 2.8% chance of reaching 250,000 miles.

That result was slightly below Nissan but significantly higher than Mitsubishi, which was the lowest-ranked Japanese automaker.

Toyota’s Future Ranking Could Change

The iSeeCars study is based on currently available pre-owned vehicles that have reached 250,000 miles, meaning the rankings could change in the future.

Toyota’s position could be affected by recent challenges involving the twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine used in the Tundra and Sequoia. Toyota announced a recall in 2024 for the engine, citing problematic machining and manufacturing processes that left fine metal shavings inside the engine, causing excessive wear and eventual failure.

However, the updated engine design introduced as part of the recall may not have completely resolved the issue. A recent teardown of a replacement V6 engine found in a 2026 Tundra revealed worn rod bearings and metallic material in the crankcase, described as the “forbidden glitter” that usually signals a significant engine problem.

For now, Toyota remains at the top of iSeeCars’ rankings for the likelihood of reaching 250,000 miles, with Lexus, Honda, Acura and GMC rounding out the five brands that exceeded the overall average.
