The Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe has been spotted testing at the Nürburgring Nordschleife only months after Mercedes revealed the 2027 AMG GLC 53, raising questions about what the automaker is preparing next. The prototype appears to feature updated lighting, while its exact powertrain remains unclear.
Updated Looks for the AMG GLC Coupe
The prototype captured during a recent industry testing pool day is a Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe 53, identified by its four round exhaust tips rather than squared outlets.
Both the headlights and taillights feature new graphics. Mercedes has also camouflaged much of the front end and tailgate, although significant styling changes are not expected. Possible updates could include tweaks to the grille and front bumper, while the side skirts, wheel arches and fenders appear unchanged.
The upturned rear end and subtle spoiler also appear largely familiar. Inside, changes are expected to be limited to new material, color and trim choices, along with the introduction of Mercedes’ MB.OS infotainment software.
Could This Be the Return of the GLC 63?
The prototype’s GLC 53 body currently points to a 3.0-liter electrically turbocharged six-cylinder engine producing 443 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque.
However, the possibility that Mercedes is testing the reborn GLC 63 cannot be ignored. The previous GLC 63 used a 671-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder plug-in hybrid system, a setup that was broadly unpopular among enthusiasts. Mercedes has been slowly bringing V8 power back to models where it had been lost, with the aim of winning back buyers.
Why the Prototype Appeared So Soon
The new AMG GLC prototype was spotted not long after the 2027 model was revealed and before it reached dealerships. That timing indicates production will only begin next year, with a launch expected in the second half of 2027 or possibly early in 2028.
That also means it may still be too early to draw firm conclusions from the prototype’s styling. The vehicle could be intended to distract from a GLC 63 test program, or it could simply represent a lighting and infotainment update for the existing GLC 53.
For now, the Nürburgring prototype leaves the exact direction of the Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe open, with further details expected to emerge as additional test vehicles are spotted.
